If you don't me by now, I'm easily influenced by new music that I've added to my library and "Tony and Maria" was staring at me by Los Lobos that was on a compilation cd "Hear Music Vol 8" that I spent $.50 on in a thrift store in Ashland. Again it was a fun journey to page through the library for all the songs that were ___ and ___. Over 60 songs and then I looked up the & because I knew I needed Pancho & Lefty. After I had at least the whole digital library, I looked to see what 12-16 songs I would like to listen to over and over. (Yes once a playlist is struck, it becomes a companion.)
Now anyone following the blog knows I'm a sucker for a good story song having published three edition about "Tell Me a Story" The last one was in honor of Todd Snider's passing away, and has links to all three volumes.
This playlist songs are definitely stories on a theme and here's what I ended up with:
Ok here are the covers, because I love the covers...
Let's go:
1) Tony and Maria - Los Lobos
Not much I can say... love the song, love Los Lobos
2) Athena and the Fisher King - Kray Van Kirk
I wasn't sure about this one at first... but I love the introduction and it grabbed me into the story.
3) Billy and Beau - The Buffalo Gals
Need more from this group.
4) The Captain and the Kid - Jimmy Buffett
Ok when this showed up available, how could I not add it. Wow... here's Jimmy later in his life talking about the song. If you are a Parrot Head... watch and listen to this song and perhaps all of the series he and his daughter put together during the pandemic.
5) Donald and Lydia - John Prine
Dang on his first record, John set a huge high bar for songwriting.
6) Duncan and Brady - New Riders of the Purple Sage
Leave it to them to put their signature to a traditional song.
7) Edith and the King Pin - Joni Mitchell
Joni's impeccable rich storytelling, she's such a scene setter.
8) Harold and Beverly's Waltz - Rick Thompson
I kind of figured adding this song from a LaCrosse friend to the playlist, it would have me adding the song to YouTube. Well the song is worth it, and I used it as a mini-ad to the blog post... I hope you take a chance to watch it.
9) Henry and Edna - Drew Peterson
Well it's not Jack and Diane, it's Henry and Edna. Drew was a find when we were just out and about in Bayfield WI, kind of sounded like this.
10) Me and Bobbie McGee - Kris Kristofferson
Right a few legendary songs and artists in this playlist; and this is the cut from his first album.
11) Ruby Jean and Billy Lee - Seals & Crofts
Diamond Girl was probably my favorite Seals & Crofts album.
12) Rufus and Beverly - Rude Girls
Our second sighting of Beverly, this time from Seattle.
Love these two, and when I saw the live video I jumped on it for sharing. Yep it is their nod to Thelma & Louise.
16) Louisiana Lou and the Three Card Monty John - The Allman Brothers
I was struggling what to name this playlist and then I listened to this classic, and to the hell with the critics that didn't like "Win, Lose, Or Draw" album.
Louisiana Lou and Three Card Monty John Oh lord, what a natural pair Looking for a game, fortune and fame Waitin' just a little farther down the road somewhere
