DBT #426 Mexico

A funny thing happened when I was importing four recent album acquisitions, I loved the song "Seashores of Old Mexico" by Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson so much that I thought A MEXICO Playlist would be cool.  When I looked, I had one already but had never shared it.  Well it was a little old, so I curated it into one that I want to listen to over and over.  So let's go south of the border!  Here are the songs that I'm sure you will find both familiar and new favorites!

Right you might notice that there are songs repeated.  Not that I couldn't just cut them out and make it a Dave's Dozen; I really love the variety and of course the songs too.  Covers?  Yes here they are:

1) South Of The Border (Down Mexico Way) - Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass

It's fitting Herb is in the playlist, and yes I have ten album of Herb's in the library and I don't think I paid anything for them.  They are All from inherited collections.  Let's start with a brassy Mexican feel, go ahead and dance.

2) Mexico - Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy's unique cover of James Taylor's song that is the 15th song in this playlist.

3) Blue Mountains of Mexico - Jennifer Warnes

Here's one of my favorite ladies covering a Legendary Canadian, and yes Ian's version is the 14th song in the playlist, yes that's the end of this pattern.

4) Mexico - Rachel Angel

I bought Rachel's album back in Sep 2020 as I invested in many independent artist's music during the pandemic.  While I don't hear the Mexico reference the whole album was inspired by it:

These songs were written in the midst of a harrowing time for Angel— she was physically sick with an auto-immune disease, self-quarantined in her Brooklyn apartment, writing at a feverish pace. She reflected on her recent travels, both as a touring musician, and time spent in Mexico during a 7.1 earthquake with her family.

And you are lucky... studio versus solo acoustic video.

5) Mexico - Kendel Carson

Chip Taylor produced album, and is the harmony singer.  I just miss Kendel putting out new music.  She tends to be playing back up a lot more lately.  Ok this fan video grabbed a 2009 photo shoot for the montage.  Right, she's a beautiful talented lady.

6) Gulf Of Mexico - Sean Staples

F Trump's "Gulf of America" I bought this one in Bandcamp Nov 2022.  I discovered Sean since he is the producer of Lisa Bastoni's music; and I somehow suspect they are more than just musical partners.  This song is not in YouTube, and I plan on adding it later.

7) Spanish is a Loving Tongue - Bill Staines

I had a couple of Bill's songs to pick from, but this one will always be my favorite cover of this traditional tune.

8) They All Went To Mexico - Santana w/Willie Nelson

This cover of a Greg Brown song he never recorded is a classic favorite for me.

9) Down In Mexico - The Coasters

I have never actually seen Death Proof by Quentin Tarantino; but the lap dance scene to this song is legendary.  For the shared video, this fan put it together with dance scenes from other Tarantino movies and had the Chuck Berry song from Pulp Fiction as part of the medley.  Too good not to share for that reason.

10) Across the Borderline - Willie Nelson

Just an incredibly beautiful song from Willie, with Kris Kristofferson singing harmony; and it was written by James Dickinson, John Hiatt, and Ry Cooder.  (Pretty good group there and now I found another record to put on my want list, Ry Cooder's Get Rhythm

11) Border Town - Souther Hillman Furay Band

If you follow the blog you know I love JD Souther's music, and I really only liked SHF songs if they were JD's.

12) Seashores of Old Mexico - Merle Haggard & Willie Nelson

Ah the reason I posted this, and while the critics panned their second duet album; it was still worth the price of $5 that paid for it.

13) Mexico - Alice DiMicele

Surprise another song named Mexico, from an Artist who sent out a sampler CD for the cost of shipping.  This song will really get you moving and hoping you were on some beach in Mexico.  (making love ok now I'm blushing)

I love when I can share a studio Bandcamp link and a live cut.  Great video and energy.

14) Blue Mountains of Mexico - Ian Tyson

He was a such a master painter in lyric.

15) Mexico - James Taylor

A bit more gentle that Jimmy's version earlier in this playlist.

16) South of the Border - Willie Nelson

Well Willie Nelson is credited in 80 of my 2921 albums in Discogs, so maybe he can show up four times in this playlist.  Yes this effectively bookended the playlist with three of the same songs all so unique too.

Ah... as you can feel the sea breeze from the Gulf of Mexico, here's your one click YouTube playlist.
