DBT #355 Preacher and Prophet Dreams
It could have been the fact we've started watching the Preacher Netflix series that was done in 2019. Well it sure fits my wife and my strange quota for a good show. Then I picked up some new old music from Discogs, and Lee Ann Womack had a song "The Preacher Won't Have to Lie"... well you guessed it an awesome playlist was soon created and it butted in line for the many I have waiting in the queue. The playlist has choice new music and some I forgot I loved.
1) The Preacher Won't Have To Lie - Lee Ann Womack
I decided I need I really needed to have more Lee Ann in the library is John Prine would sing a duet with her, so I bought her sophomore release "Some Things I Know" and this was the inspiration to the playlist.
2) Preacher I Have Sinned - Beggars
Oh my, I forgot how much I loved this song. It was released in 2006 and I bought it in October that year. Back in my old blog "The Zemmy Show" I featured them in this post "Banjo by The Beggars" but other posts in the old blog have broken links. I was ecstatic to see that this Australian band still exists, and now I'm following their Facebook page again. I believe this is their song, and why others haven't covered it is incredible to me. You go to love the video and the solo's from one of the trio who looks like John Cleese.
3) The Strange Man - Patty Griffin
Yes I recently added her Grammy winning "Downtown Church"... yes that Jesus prophet & God was just walking around torching souls on fire. What a great album.
4) Preacher Went A-Hunting - Jim Post
Oh my I love my Jimmy David preacher songs, and he has a bunch. When searching to add this to the playlist I found a song I need to get into the library... Billy Strings doing the song. So obviously it's a traditional song. I'm going to give you both for reference.. Billy was such a pup in this video.
Here's Jim's version with such a great back up band.
5) The Prophet - Ordinary Elephant
Right, I finally got some of their music into my library. I've loved them since seeing them at Mile of Music.
6) Two Ways To Love An Enemy - Don Lange
In my playlist I have live recording from Don's concert at UW Manitowoc back in 1976, and while this song a recent import from the old cd, it's one that's been with me for a while. Does it belong in the playlist, hmm what preacher told you to love your enemy?
7) Purgatory - Mati Haskell
A recent purchase of a musician I followed back on MySpace. Isn't Purgatory just a dream created by the Catholic church? Just love Mati's bluesy vocals wrapped around my soul.
8) Who Says God Is Dead - Eilen Jewell
Her "Butcher Holler" tribute to Loretta Lynn is a new purchase and it'll show up in the blog some more that's for sure.
9) The Devil's Paintbrush Road - The Wailin' Jennys
Many a prophet dreamed about devils.
10) God Danced (The Day You Were Born) - Hot Soup
Yep I just picked up the "The Way You Like It" and discovered this awesome song; and the studio version is very close to this awesome live cut.
11) Lord, I Need Somebody Bad Tonight - Miss Tess
Prophet or mortal dreams are so many times about love... this is a kick ass prayer to God. Oh yeah and step up to the plate and buy it here.
12) Another Hail Mary - Chad Elliott
Ok the hail Mary in this case is a prayer to make the next town... but how could not include a song with Bob Dylan on the radio. The video isn't the version on his new album but I loved the visuals.
13) Pimps & Preachers - Paul Thorn
When I started this playlist I thought this had to be included; and while the studio version is awesome, I never pass up the opportunity to share a MusicFog video.
14) Belshazah - Johnny Cash
This old song was new to me recently after buying Michael Tyler's vinyl collection.
15) Street Corner Preacher - Amos Lee
Oh my what I great song I don't listen to enough.
16) Trying To Get To Heaven - Bob Dylan
I just realized that Time Out of Mind was produced by Daniel Lanois so I need to get it into the library and some playlists. Loved this fan video, and it's a perfect to my prophet dreams.
Oh... I truly love this playlist. Here's you one click YouTube.
