Dave's Music #76 Shanna in a Dress - Robot

If last week the release was new but old, this week is as fresh as the vegetables in her salad.  Shanna in a Dress released her first studio release called Robot.  Though her live CD is incredible with a great back up band, she's on her game with this release.  I've been mesmerized by this woman ever since she submitted one of the best written song about Alzheimer victim,  "A Face Like Yours."  While she likes to proclaim herself a robot insensitive to so many things, she sure can capture both rich feelings and funny twists.  I called her the next Christine Lavin, and in the folk circles that's a compliment.

Let's look at the release.

1) Robot

Love the hint of electronics and a great bass line to her self claimed lifestyle.  This girl can pack sure a lot of words into a song.

2) Playing With Fire

This song has a great chorus with some tasteful background vocals.  "Flying your kite gets you Electrified"... love it.

3) Daddy's Little Girl

Kind of a great answer to her "Face Like Yours" where she again repeats the premise that she doesn't share her emotions "giving nothing back"... but this does end happy at least I'm going for that as being a dad myself.

4) Everything and Nothing

Love the toy chimes in this song that is self psychological review, again her images of teeter totter fit the mix choice.

5) Shitshow

Ok we'll allow Shanna another self review as she describes herself as a shitshow, but as much as I know her, this really is her and I love her for it and this is one of my favorites on the release.  Love the piano work in this piece.  A truly awesome video that you get to see her naked in too.

6) Finite

Then she slows and gets sensitive in a relationship piece, and the writer in her must always make her overthink what she's going through.  You are sucked in rooting for them.  (if this one stops playing at 3:30 it's getting fixed)

7) Boomerang

A great love hymn of advice in the chorus, but the verses shows off Shanna's unique humor and word play, like "karma chameleon refrain" who thinks of these things.  This one has a great video too.

8) Have a Great Day

I could see Shanna staring a stranger writing the story of their life, and she leaves them with a smile and wish for happiness.

9) Mmm, That's Hot

This is the only song repeated from the live release, but it's a damn good one.  Could be a top 5 best song that inspired me to sand the table. (no it needed it I wasn't trying to get her hot).  The studio version is tight and bluesy, now we need a new video; though the live one still make me smile.

Here's the picture of the table, just in case she reads this blog.  I wouldn't trust putting up one of me actually doing the sanding, I don't think she could handle it.

Many know that tall women do intimidate me, and so easily when she asked me to be a Patreon supporter I was all in; such a good way to give back since Spotify sucks the life out of musicians making money these days.  Plus she works hard to give content to supporters and followers; just look at the amount of videos she puts out.  With the amount of music I have to listen to, I can't get to them all.

I do have to admit Shanna has become a person I'd really call a friend, and we've hosted her while she played the Great River Folk Fest (that she won the Songwriter contest) plus she has an open invite to play a house concert.  Put that aside, her music truly is magic; and you start listening to it more and more and you'll want her as a friend too.

It wouldn't be fair to mention "A Face Like Yours" twice and not share it with, be careful if you cry easily.

Hope you loved the journey.  You can find and follow us on Facebook  and as always Good Music has NO Expiration Date, so if you are listening to this ten years from now, it still will be awesome music.  If this is a first time visit, check out the index of themes for past Reviews and Playlist editions and for the Reviews alone, click here
