I have added so much music to the library lately, YES so much I'm in that situation again where so many are going unplayed. While listening to an Arielle Silver tune about asteroids that I got a while back but she was in my SERFA Trip playlist sparked an idea for a playlist "Up and Out There." I really didn't expect a lot of songs about Asteroids, but Sky, Sun, Moon, Mars and Flying quickly rounded out a playlist of music recently added to the library.
Now this is a great mix of the new music, and where all my music comes from; join me on the journey.
1) Asteroids and Chaos - Arielle Silver.
There I was working outside with my headphones on and Arielle started telling me about Asteroids.. who wouldn't stop, reach down and click the like button and stash away an idea. Wise words:
An asteroid is coming I read it in a magazine It’s gonna come incredibly close Tall as the Empire State Building Chaos on the doorstep I tell you we should hide Stockpile jars of jelly Clean the sleeping bags, stock up on wine
2) Flyin' - Ben Gage
After seeing Ben for the second time at SEFRA a regional Folk Alliance (first was at FARM), I decided he's so good I need more in my library, and I need to listen more to the songs I own already. Flyin' started to round out the theme of being in the air and sky. Described as:
Singer-songwriter Ben Gage is set to release his latest single, “Flyin’,” on April 25th—a warm, groove-laced track that drifts through the jazzier edges of folk and blues. With its laid-back rhythm and soulful instrumentation, the song invites listeners into a world where freedom feels just out of reach.
At its core, “Flyin’” is a song of longing—rooted in the quiet envy that blooms when watching someone seem to glide through life with ease. It's a gentle plea: “How do you do that? How do you lift off like that while I’m still stuck down here?” The core of the track was recorded live to capture its raw emotion, creating a sound that’s both intimate and unpolished in the best way. It’s a tune that feels like a conversation around a campfire, honest and unguarded.
Of course, here's a nice solo contrast.
3) The Moon - Rachel Laven
Heavenly... now our first visit to the moon, from a woman I was introduced at SERFA.
Ain't nobody wishin' on the moon My luck's all run out its plain to see Dreams are meant to come true when you wish upon a star Ain't nobody wishin' on me.
Well I'm wishing we'll see her again.
Of course I found a solo video that also needs some view love.
4) While the Sun is Standing Still - Kevin Neidig
Another new artist from SERFA that I'm proud owner of TWO Vinyls I need to put into Discogs. This single I got from Bandcamp after the event; he describes the song as:
I wrote this song shortly before the winter solstice and was thinking about how we don't see much snow at this time of year anymore where I live. The rest of the lyrics poured out after that. I performed all the parts to this track with the exception of a harmony part that my wife Stephanie Shatzer sang. This was all recorded in my home studio.
I ran into Dan Madoff in the check out aisle at Home Depot where I was buying more flowers and vegetables. We spend a lot in spring to see pretty colors in the yard and of course to eat well later in summer. Dan surprised me sending his recent album with his brothers and wife in the next couple days. Yes more challenges to listen to everything. Of course it's a great album and I'm glad I could find this unique titled song for the playlist.
6) Once in a Blue Moon - Patty and Craig
Another gifted album from a couple I met at FARM, who would like to play the house concert. I pretty much have the next year set but some dates have to settle. Still I'm getting their music in the current playlist I've been working with outside (spring brings more opportunities to listen while I work), speaking of work and flying Patty's lyrics:
Dishes and diapers, bills to pay The years keep flying, Don’t wish your life away Cuz it’s here in the living Day by day A love for the ages, Built this way.
7) Cotton Candy Sky - Admiral Radio
I know that when artists drop some singles that I'll eventually end up buying them on an album, but it's still fun to have new music (like I need more) of artist that I follow. These two are a great follow on IG, I love to see what they are up to next. Yes I met them at the 2024 SERFA.
Of course their creativity pops up again in this cool video.
8) Sun Down on Mars - Shinyribs
Ever since we saw Shinyribs at the 2024 Moccasin Creek Festival, I've been a BIGGER fan; and I bought his new album on vinyl on a Bandcamp Friday a short time ago. Still trying to digest it, and how this for a title that fits. Mars yikes.
9) Babylon's Falling - Martin Glimore
Recently on a Bandcamp Friday I bought Martin's "Thea is a Light Blue" because I was so impressed with him winning the Rocky Mtn Folks Fest Songwriter contest in 2024. He reimagined a Sacred Heart Shape Note hymn, so I count that as something from above.
Here he is solo, and yes he is a tasteful guitarist too.
I had this CD on my want list in Discogs, and recently I did a buy and scooped it up. It has an awesome song called "Records" that I can identify with, and I found ages ago when I was doing the Ocooch Mountain Radio show. Definitely more Indie Rock than my normal tastes so it can shake up the playlist too. While the title fits, I have no idea why it's named that, read the lyrics for yourself:
I’ve got the key to my head in my lungs Tongue keeps rolling around in my mouth Out I walk through the park in the light Darkness circles around on the grass That’s how everything seems When you dream of sweet wonderful things And the smells…
Should I sell? (don’t sell it, no don’t sell it) My mind’s a spigot and I’m starting to dig it
I’ve got buckets of time in my hands Am I spilling them right, I don’t know It’s too early to tell, should I sell? Or save some for myself, well You know I don’t need money for much Should I sell?
(don’t sell it, no don’t sell it) My mind’s a spigot and I’m starting to dig it
I’ve got buckets of time in my hands Am I spilling them right, I don’t know It’s too early to tell, should I sell? Or save life for myself, well
I just don’t know Can't you show Me where to go
And I don't know if the video will help but it's too much fun not to watch.
12) Flyin' - Southern Avenue
I ran into this fun group through an ad email from Alligator Records. They are good, and will show up again in the blog that's for sure. Here is some of their southern rock feel, but they are so eclectic with two strong women singing intense vocals.
Yes, while you didn't see a lot of videos, there is a one click YouTube playlist. Isn't it cool I found all this music in Bandcamp too!
