Dave's Music #116 On the Right Side

I have to give credit to Bill Passalacqua for suggesting Grant Peeples "Insurrection Song January 6" for the impetus of this playlist.  While some of you may feel uncomfortable with too little or too much politics, I do feel I picked ten songs that are hard to argue that they are pointing us to the right side of compassion, fairness, and maybe even the way Jesus would want us to behave in this world.  (Grant has a song about this too)

Let's just going you'll see what I mean.

1) Insurrection Song January 6 - Grant Peeples

I love the Irish beat and I'm going to assume he borrowed it in the folk tradition without too much research.  I absolutely love the complexities to Grant provided in his description on Bandcamp:

A self-described “tree-hugger that watches NASCAR, and Buddhist with a gun below the seat,” Grant Peeples is known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes, raucous humor and heart-gigging ballads.
He is the recipient of the Focus Foundation Award for Creative Excellence, which cited the “humor, compassion and wisdom of his songs,” and their "unflinching social insight and cultural acuity."

He has more news worthy songs in his Bandcamp page, but I'll add them in the future:

2) The Downward Road - Jake Blount

While we need to remember the Jan 6th event at the voting poll; let's not fail to remember our nation's history and our largest sin; slavery.  I just cannot imagine treating people like meat or dogs; and Jake's release is best described on his BC site:

'The New Faith' tells an Afrofuturist story set in a far-future world devastated by climate change. Jake Blount and his collaborators embody a group of Black climate refugees as they perform a religious service, invoking spirituals that are age-old even now, familiar in their content but extraordinary in their presentation. These songs, which have seen Black Americans through countless struggles, bind this future community together and their shared past; beauty and power held in song through centuries of devastation, heartbreak, and loss.

This song is so old with the rap update, yes collected from enslaved slaves in Jamaica in 1688.

3) Bible Belt Saturday Night - Chad Elliott

Right these aren't your traditional protest songs.  Following a songs about slaves with one that about a boy growing up disgusted with the Rebel flag in the Bible Belt, but is saved by a teacher who loves Bob Dylan.  My kind of story, and she was on the right side.  Chad would be a featured release when he gets his music on Bandcamp.  Here's the song joined in progress from the Storyhill Fest.

4) Things Goin' On - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Since Grant Peeples was found in a tweet thread about Florida musicians, my favorite all time FL musicians came from Jacksonville and wrote one of the best in your face political song that doesn't get much play.  I cover it acoustically when I get a chance.

5) Mississippi Goddam - Kelsey Waldon

From Kelsey's cover EP written by Nina Simone

This really made me look up Nina's version... wow the difference but she is still biting in her delivery

6) Be Good - Carsie Blanton

Back to the Jesus revolutionary line way back at the beginning. This song has graced many a playlist, I love it for it's simplicity in message.

And a different live video... I love Carsie.

7) There are Strange Things Happening Everyday - Johnny Cash

I bought this 1979 vinyl and leave it to Johnny to cover a Sister Rosetta Tharpe song and bring it meaning to mistrust of politicians and things you are seeing around you.

8) Operation Never Mind - James McMurtry

Yep let's not call it a war but an Operation, and let's not have it play on TV like Vietnam - James hit it perfectly how some A-hole politicians operate.

Here's a chance to see him play it live:

9) Lives in the Balance - Jackson Browne

Jackson reminds us to think globally, and we all know how hard that is to do.  It's fitting that I picked an acoustic version because I'm listening to his Solo Acoustic release in my playlist.

10) Our Deliverance - Indigo Girls

I need to take this heavy playlist out a little lighter and give you a chance for deliverance and bring us together.  Emily and Amy discuss this with no other than Joan Baez about this.

Here's the whole song.. It's truly one of my favorites

AFTER I published this playlist I bought a song that is perfect to be included, so let's turn it up to ELEVEN.

11) Cooler Than Yours - Seasaw

Seasaw from Madison WI, while they tend more IndyRock rather than my true Americana tastes; I just love them.  After reading their description for the song I decided to add one more because it talks to the post's theme:
Seasaw's new song Cooler Than Yours is an ode to the awesome people in this world that are actively anti-racist, feminist, LGBTQIA+ allies, and critical thinkers. Summed up in this one lyric asking 'why is it a revolution just to be a decent human' …an excellent yet sad question a lot of us ponder every day, the song applauds those that are living in a way that betters the world, making it safer and more inclusive. Hoping your best friend along with everyone else in your life encompasses the things this song is about, but if not, I must confess, my best friend is cooler than yours.
