Dave's Music #145 Romance
The struggle is real
She pulled him out, He falls back
As part of the deal
He’s so grateful
She welded together his life
Endured the sparks of strife
Until He stood whole
Without the past He stole
There are no hidden answers
In the next barroom dancer
It becomes plain to see
What you meant to me
Words words words
Nothing is absorbed
Lies lies lies
All kept in side
At the table she set me down
Weary from a familiar song
I am the man she made
Then cast off in a trade
to be continued ....
Struggle By Dave Schipper (c) 2019 Rose Riversongs
So as I was listening to Emily Scott Robinson's "If Trouble Comes a Lookin'" while driving to my hometown on Thanksgiving I said I could a "Romance Novel" playlist. At first I was worried that I could just search in the title, with the help of my friend and just browsing my library I found a list for any romantic horny reader. Not all will bring tears and true to novels many have great stories... my prerequisite was the deed was done or there was some skin in the action. (yep you can't take the sports fan out of me too)
1) If Trouble Comes a Lookin- Emily Scott Robinson
My goodness Emily is one of the best songwriters I've been listening to this year, if these song doesn't get a tear to fall then get yourself tested to see if you have a heart.
At quarter til the bartender will make the final call
She’ll slip down off her stool and sway slowly down the hall
And he’ll kiss her like she always wanted, back against the wall
And she’ll step out of her dress looking like Eve before the fall
She’ll slip down off her stool and sway slowly down the hall
And he’ll kiss her like she always wanted, back against the wall
And she’ll step out of her dress looking like Eve before the fall
Plus it's a steamy video.
2) Cover Me Up - Jason Isbell
Thanks to Carol for reminding of the passion in this song... yes many a romance novel could steal these lines:
I put your faith to the testWhen I tore off your dressIn Richmond on highI sobered up, I swore off that stuff
While I'm listening to the studio version, here's a great live cut:
3) Chelsea Hotel #2 - Leonard Cohen
So many romantic songs to pick from Leonard, and this one I wanted a little NC-19. and this video is perfect for our novel; ride the elevator with him and kiss Janis on the way up since he wrote it for her.
I remember you well in the Chelsea HotelYou were talkin' so brave and so sweetGivin' me head on the unmade bedWhile the limousines wait in the street
So if you all can't relate to being ugly, then you might be lying to the mirror... we're never satisfied.
I remember you well in Chelsea HotelYou were famous, your heart was a legendYou told me again you preferred handsome menBut for me you would make an exception
4) San Diego Serenade - Nanci Griffith
I immediately thought of this song by Tom Waits when I thought of this playlist, and it's not soft porn, it's romance when he says the following lines; I picked Nanci because I heard from her first. Gay or straight, a shimmer light on a breast is a slow pulse to insanity.
I never saw the east coast until I moved to the westI never saw the moonlight until it shone off of your breast
5) Stanyan Street - Rod McKuen
Judge me for wanting or judge me for my stubbornness, I am guilty, guilty, guilty of being a Rod McKuen fan. I can listen to Rod and evaporate to the candle flame, the mist of bath, or the warmth of the cotton... I truly wanted to share "Love's been good to me" but this spoken mostly tune hits home. I aspire to have written this:
You lie bent up in embryo sleep
Below the painting of the blue fisherman
Without a pillow
The checkered cover kicked and tangled on the
Floor
The old house creaking now
A car going by
The wind
A fire engine up the hill
I've disentangled myself from you
Moved silently
Groping in the dark for cigarettes
And now three cigarettes later
Still elated
Still afraid
I sit across the room watching you -
The light from the street lamp coming through the
Shutters
Hysterical patterns flash on the wall sometimes
When a car goes by
Otherwise there is no change
Not in the way you lie curled up
Not in the sounds that never come from you
Not in the discontent I feel
You've filled completely
This first November day
With Sausalito and sign language
Canoe and coffee
Ice cream and your wide eyes
And now unable to sleep
Because the day is finally going home
Because your sleep has locked me out
I watch you and wonder at you
I know your face by touch when it's dark
I know the profile of your sleeping face
The sound of you sleeping
Sometimes I think you were all sound
Kicking free of covers
And adjusting shutters
Moving about in the bathroom
Taking twenty minutes of our precious time
I know the hills
And gullys of your body
The curves
The turns
I have total recall of you
And Stanyan Street
Because I know it will be important later
It's quiet now
Only the clock
Moving toward rejection tomorrow
Breaks the stillness
Below the painting of the blue fisherman
Without a pillow
The checkered cover kicked and tangled on the
Floor
The old house creaking now
A car going by
The wind
A fire engine up the hill
I've disentangled myself from you
Moved silently
Groping in the dark for cigarettes
And now three cigarettes later
Still elated
Still afraid
I sit across the room watching you -
The light from the street lamp coming through the
Shutters
Hysterical patterns flash on the wall sometimes
When a car goes by
Otherwise there is no change
Not in the way you lie curled up
Not in the sounds that never come from you
Not in the discontent I feel
You've filled completely
This first November day
With Sausalito and sign language
Canoe and coffee
Ice cream and your wide eyes
And now unable to sleep
Because the day is finally going home
Because your sleep has locked me out
I watch you and wonder at you
I know your face by touch when it's dark
I know the profile of your sleeping face

And Stanyan Street

It's quiet now
Only the clock
Moving toward rejection tomorrow
Breaks the stillness

6) Kate McCannon -Colter Wall
Once again Carol Roth from Adventures in Americana gifted me the recommendation of an artist or song I was ignorant to, and yes it still is fresh though released in 2017. While I bought it on my Apple store, you get this dang cool solo video instead of the studio version... let's be honest both are equally incredible. Here's hoping you buy like I did to make this blog true to its mission.
7) Courtin' in the Kitchen - Gaelic Storm
Oh my this never happens does it.. "Hooley in the kitchen"... I did say I Romance Comedies right.. add in I love English humor and drama. The studio version is so much better than this, yet I love it equal. We know what's going on in the kitchen... (So go buy the studio version though I love this live video)
8) Sugar Daddy - Allison Sattinger
This lady graced me with her friendship ages ago digitally at MySpace. I so fell in love with her spirit and oh my those eyes and pipes. This sensual song about age difference just ties that fictional knot of an older love that has maybe just a little bit of money.
Here's a live cut to let you have a low res love to her a few years back, but your can hear the studio version here.
So back to the romance.. "I do know that I'm rich enough to buy you,. wearing just a smile" ... oh my. I make a deal about music living forever.. but this song could have lived a few centuries ago with an old fart who fell in love.
9) Navajo Rug - Ian Tyson
I aspire to write about having sex in close local cafe, Ian has been a songster writing 60's prose and cowboy love. I wonder if the Navajo rug was scratchy on the skin.
So before the month was over from this playlist being published; Ian Tyson passed away at 89. I picked this song to be my tribute song to his memory. I had known this song for ages but learned it quickly, still had to put my glasses on to make sure I had all the lyrics right. I hope you enjoy. Rest In Peace you old cowboy, thanks for all the great songs.
10) She left me for Jesus - Hayes Carll
I truly would love a hillbilly romance novel based on this song.. I covered in it once in a bar and got "comments", but really don't call out "Jesus" when you are orgasming... I leave you to Blast to this video and screaming "Jesus" where apprioriate... "well that last time we made love he even called out my name:
11) A Better Place to Be - Harry Chapin
Truly I worn out this vinyl and back then I bought it twice but this story you need to have a good 15 minutes to listen to the song... OR FORGET it.. if you want to leave early don't click.. you need to hear a story deep in my past that talked to me so dearly. Let's come full circle to the first song...Emily took so less time to tell her story.. at least Harry brought some food back in the morning. Yes we are all lonely but maybe we could find someone to come with us, because it's like a better place to be.
12) Bozo's in Love - Greg Brown
I resemble Bozo, because many time I look like what the disco cat left on the dance floor; too bad she you poor old jerk.
Now rip that bodice, grab that arm gaze into those eyes, kiss the nape, breathe in the perfume and fantasy... next time you hear a song like this .. drop me a note.
BONUS "A Love Song to a Stranger" by Joan Baez.. my sister in law Kim recommended this Joan Baez song. I'll look for the vinyl to buy, so for now I don't own it; but the playlist needed some more songs from a women's perspective... this time the strangers which I'd assume is a guy is nude.
SECOND Bonus... Siena Christie recommended this White House song by Vanessa Carlton which is about the song's main character losing their virginity. I tried to buy the song on Bandcamp, and she's not out there. 14 million views of this video... ha she must be popular? I'll look her up on Apple music, I buy there as a backup.
