DBT #322 Don't Bury These Songs

Many a blog reader knows by now new music creates and idea to dive deep into the library, and when I saw that Gentlemen's Anti-Temperance League released music into Bandcamp I jumped at it because they had Kellie back with them in the studio.  Now the boys are good without her and awesome with her. (photo from their FB page)

So their cut from their 2021 album got me started, but how many "Bury" songs will I find? Well 15 was the answer, though I could have added many more covers of "Bury me not" like from Johnny Cash and Michael Martin Murphy.

1) Please Don't Bury my B-Sides - The GATL

Isn't that a great title for a vinyl lover?

2) Bury Me - Dusty Heart

Any excuse to listen to Barbara Jean and Molly Dean is a treat.  This spooky song highlight Barbara's unique banjo picking and their beautiful harmonies.

3) Bury Me Under the Willow Tree - Roseanne Cash

From her legendary album, "The List" of songs dad told her to cover.  You know I love when I can get an ACL video for the blog playlist.

4) Bury Me Deep - Ivan & Alyosha - Dualtone Sampler

Welp I don't have much from this duo, so now I'm following them in Bandcamp. Yep this little grungy band rocks it way from Seattle.

5) Bury me in Boots of Spanish Leather - Courtney Yasmineh

Hey Bob, this girl wants you to call her, and yes she loves the music I love too.

6) Bury me in my Shades - Shel Silverstein

Staying in the time period that Courtney was singing about, she forgot the complete creative hipster of the day, and his parody of "Bury me not on the lone Prairie"

7) Bury Me - Dwight Yoakam

The playlist needed a little hillbilly retro rock and while I don't know Maria McKee she's aces in this song.

8) Bury Me Not On the Lone Prairie - Joe Hickerson

Joe was such an interpreter of folk songs.  His voice was not a pop accessible one, so now wonder I loved it.

9) Bury Me Not (The Dying Cowboy) - David Huckfelt

David must have grew up on Joe too, he sampled his song at the beginning, thus why I put both songs in the playlist.  Yes this is the song many a cover is out there, and his is one of the best.

10) Bury Me With My Guitar - Judy Collins & Jonas Fjeld (with Chatham County Line)

You would never expect a great bluegrass song for Judy.

11) Bury Your Burdens in the Ground - William Elliott Whitmore

Back in 2011 I got this song into the library from a Paste cd, I probably need to follow him more.  I got a few more songs, but this song hadn't had a single complete listen until I put it in this playlist.  While it was fun to see him live... the audience was anxious so listen to the studio version that has birds singing in the background.

12) Please Don't Bury Me - John Prine

Not much to say about this classic, except I love that it's in this playlist

Of course if he was out there live doing it, it would have to be in the playlist.

13) We Bury the Hatchet - Garth Brooks

I've recently added more Garth to the library, so it's fun to have a more recent country legend in the mix too.

14) The Willow Hits: Big River/Bury Me Beneath The Willow Tree/Walkin' After Midnight - Cassie And Maggie

Our 2nd Willow Tree, but these sisters blend it in a great willow tree medley.

15) To Love is To Bury - Cowboy Junkies

Yes I thought before I stopped, I needed to check my Discogs for a bury song that wasn't just another "Bury me not"... boy I hadn't listened to the Cowboy Junkies for a while.  See that's why I do this... I'm very selfish and do not want to bury great artists in the backroom.  Plus it makes me search and find a such a strong video that is FIFTEEN years old.  Actually I like the vocal mix in this better than the CD. (oh no, it also has a willow tree in it, perfect follow up to no. 14)

Well that was fun.  Here's your ONE-click playlist.
