DBT #332 Bluebird

This morning it was -12 degrees this morning still at 9:30, that's when I decided that I'm perfectly fine not going anywhere today and just listening to music.  Last weekend we had a trip to the east coast of Wisconsin to see family, friends and go to a birthday party and a concert with the Whiskeybelles.  My wife said we could kill time by stopping at a record store, and oh my I found a good one in Stardust Records and Collectables.  Yes 11 records later and now about five hours into importing these gems.  You would think that they would inspire a playlist, and they did (Walls & Harlan Howard coming in the future) but somehow I got on a tangent with the word Bluebird.  Maybe it was because I was wishing for spring, or just straight curiousity; but off I went.

So Bluebird did have me in the backroom grabbing CDs and vinyls for seven of 15 songs, again I thank Discogs for allowing me to search now 2,657 albums for the word "Bluebird".. yes so many of the same named song, but just really a few doubles.

Now the challenge is to see how many I can find in either Bandcamp or YouTube.

1) Bluebird - Stone & Snow

I knew my friends are out in Bandcamp, as I was listening to it I wondered why is this called "Bluebird"? Yes I do love when artists share their lyrics in BC

When the bluebird sings this is how it goes
Don't you go on and lie to me baby 'cuz I already know

We get to see Clint and Karen jamming the song on their 2022 NPR Tiny Desk submission:

2) Bluebird Wine - Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell

Yes I own "Old Yellow Moon" in a CD, and I didn't import the song from Emmylou's "Pieces of the Sky" because it was the same Rodney Crowell song re-recorded 38 years later.  Here's a live cut of them doing the song.   I love how she says this song goes back to the beginning of their singing relation.

3) Bluebird - Pokey LaFarge

The infamous Pokey sound... you know all my lists are so eclectic and his official video is intense!

4) I Heard The Bluebirds Sing - Matt Watroba

There will be three versions of this song and all unique.  Matt is a little more obscure and independent and I could find the song only on his site.  Click Here to listen to it.

5) Bluebird - Marc Knopfler

Here's another head turner in style, and a cool fan video.

Yes, I got squirrels in my rafters Weevils in my hay Squirrels in my rafters Weevils in my hay If I was you, little bluebird I'd up and fly away Fly away, baby

6) Bluebird Creek - Chad Elliott

Boy I had this 2006 song well before I met Chad for the first time at the 2022 Storyhill Fest.  I figured out after a Google search that I likely got it as a free download from Folk Alley from their songwriting contest in 2006.

Chad and Kathryn have recently start playing it again as Weary Ramblers and yes I wish I could share his original studio version, it's wonderful with a cool banjo in the mix.

7) Glad Bluebird Of Happiness - Joan Baez

Boy I was grateful this came up in my Discogs search because I bought "David's Album" a year or so ago and never got to importing any of it.  It's really a great piece of history recorded at the same time as one of my favorite Baez's records "Any Day Now".

8) If You Were a Bluebird - Emmylou Harris

Emmylou can show up as much as she wants in my playlists, and yes of course "Bluebird" is another one of my favorite vinyls of hers because it has "Icy Blue Heart" on it.

9) Where Do My Bluebird Fly - The Tallest Man On Earth

I love these playlists because they bring out artists I own and don't listen to enough.  Can I say I like this stripped down live cut better than the studio version?

10) I Heard The Bluebird Sing - Finest Kind

Here we go version and while they have three great singers, I hear this as just Ian Robb and Shelley Posen duet.  This song is not on the YouTube playlist at the end, boy we're striking out on this song so far on YT.

11) Bluebird - Jes Raymond

I must have loved seeing The Blackberry Bushes at the Trempealeau Hotel because I bought TWO cd's that night "Even the Trees" and "Three Red Feathers"  This playlist gives me the opportunity to listen to the first one which was Jes's solo album.  Somehow I feel lucky to have found it on YouTube.

12) Bluebird - The Smith Sisters

I know I got this folky record "Bluebird" from my Manitowoc source Golden Ring Folklore Center, mainly because the cover looked great, it was a Flying Fish label, and Doc Watson is on one song too.  Later I found that Debi Smith ended up as part of the "Four Bitchin Babes"  There we go again, this isn't available in BC or YouTube.

13) Bluebird - Bonnie Raitt

On Bonnie's first record she covered Stephen Stills song that was from his Buffalo Springfield days.

14) Bluebird Revisited - Stephen Stills

Of course I had Stephen's revisiting of the song on his second solo offering.   He starts off reflecting with a cool organ introduction.... you can find the original song after these lines and the tempo picks up.

Come back, come backCan we turn the next page together?

15) I Heard The Bluebird Sing - Kris & Rita

Hey we didn't strike out on this song, but I wonder if someone will take it down someday for copy write infringement of "Heaven's Gate"  Hey at least it's Kris dancing but not with Rita Coolidge.

So that was fun.  The one click YouTube playlist has a dozen songs, so there you go.
