DBT #334 Classified Blues

This playlist is brought to you by a conversation with a local musician who admitted she would browse the blog.  Yes this was kind of out of the blue and Brianna told me that she is a "blues listener" who appreciates how Clapton and Stevie Ray show up in playlists.  I considered the idea maybe I should really dive more into my blues library and give it a focus.  Call me foolish to think that the Genre selection on some CD library would be the generation of this playlist, but that's what it is.  My iTunes library has a genre column and I sorted it, and these songs are all CLASSIFIED as Blues.  I love how the selection gave me classic legends and independent artists playing their asses off.  Your choice which is which in this curated list, some who I consider friends. As in the past, let's see what in the world I can find from my library in either Bandcamp or YouTube (no Spotify in my world).

1) I Can't Stand The Rain - Arielle Verinis

Back in 2014 I downloaded Arielle's album for Noisetrade; and this song hadn't been played since 2017 but it was my favorite and maybe because it really has legs back to 1973 (my freshman year) and yes Tina Turner covered the song.   Suffice to say, I will be listening more to that album again.

2) King Pelican - Chad Elliott & The Redemptions

Yes I've hosted Chad to a house concert, and I had no idea that he rocked in his career so much that he's being inducted into Iowa's Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame this month.  I just put his "King Pelican" cd into Discogs so when it came up in my Blues sort, it was more the matter of which song would be selected.  I went with the title track, but the whole cd is great, and "All tracks were performed live at the legendary Sun Studio for the filming of PBS Sun Studio Sessions"

3) One Eyed Jack - Charlie Parr

No doubt Charlie would show up, and he's the first more acoustic blues in the playlist.  Now this could definitely be an double entendre song... it's all your head if you think so.  (yes it will be on the YouTube playlist at the end, but here's a BC link - so if you like it, buy it to thank Charlie)

4) Devil With Blue Suede Shoes - Chuck E. Weiss

Yes I own some late Chuck E. in the library maybe it's because he was "Extremely Cool" with blues with a hint of zydeco.

5) If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day - Eric Clapton

This song was recently put in my library because I found it my stash of promo single cd's that got from a friend at a local station.  The song is on the "Me and Mr. Johnson" album.  I just might have to buy it even if he's turned in to a right wing nut job; I still love his music.  (Come on people smile on your brother!)

6) Get Behind the Mule - Hope Waits

This Tom Waits cover came up as "Blues" though her rare "Hope Waits" cd is the coolest jazzy, sultry blues.  Yes Hope is a digital friend who isn't touring, but my goodness those pipes.  Here listen to the studio version before.....

you watch her live with her husband at the time. (btw only the studio version is on the playlist at the end)

(OMG I completely my friendship during the MySpace days inspired me to write "Lady In Blue" Yes here's a picture from my writing blog, if you want to hear me singing it you'll have to click on the picture:

7) Watch & Chain (Live) - Mike Munson & Mikkel Beckmen

Not totally intentional, but here's another local blues friend.  Yes,  it was cool to have Mike play our house concert but this tape from Ed's in Winona is awesome.

8) Turning Point - Rory Block

At the mid point I guess it's a turning point, so here's a legend who isn't alway known out of the blue's world.  Hard to pick one song, this one just felt it needed more some love from a cd back in 2015.

9) T'Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do - Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women

Actually the last song from Rory was more than her normal bare acoustic blues, like those uppity women. ;-)  Yes they'll be in the YT Playlist, but I found they have a Bandcamp page and I definitely need more uppity women in my life.

10) More Pretty Women Than One  - Spider John Koerner

The late MN acoustic blues legend reminds us all, pretty women are around every corner.

11) Catfish Blues - Willie Doss

Compilations are a wonderful way to collect the best of the original days of blues music.

12) (Don't Try to Lay No Boogie Woogie on The) Oueen of Rock n Soul - Shakura S'Aida

Not exactly sure I bought this song back in 2014, but dang it's a great song definitely a rockin' blues; so much I put the CD on my Discogs wantlist.

13) Right Next Door (Because of Me) - Robert Cray

Ok I have to sneak in a few of my all time favorites.

14) Black Coffee - Peggy Lee

This song pulled me in listening and adding to the list, it was like a cup of morning coffee; perfect to pour out on Sunday morning too.

15) Roll Away The Stone - Kelly Joe Phelps

Again not sure I inherited this cd, but this song is a great Gospel blues.

16) Too Much Seconal - Johnny Winter

One of my all time favorite dobro flute blues; thanks Johnny.

So here's a more one click YouTube playlist.
