DBT #335 1975 50th Anniversary Vol 3
Yes it's still January so let's come back to some of the favorite music that I've been listening to lately. Many of you have visited Volume One and Two in my 50th Anniversary series; and this one starts the journey of both the albums that didn't make the first 50 cut, and songs that just had to be shared from albums in the first 50. I do think being in the first 50 does mean a little more to me; but these songs and albums are significant so let's get going. Remember my pledge though, each song will have a Discogs link to my library and you already a link above to the first two; when Volume Four is released I'll link it here too.
1) (Lovely Jesus) Here I Am - HoneyTree
I bought this gem "Evergreen" fairly recently base on cover and period only to find it's mostly a folk Christian album. Maybe there is something to being a proclaimer of the good word, she's still active.
2) Same Old Bluegrass Story - The Wright Bros. Overland Stage Company
Another recent whim buy that I love, "Cornfield Cowboys" got me on the value price, and dang I knew I was going to love it; and I do. Yes this Indiana band did have hits that barely made it into the top 40, but I think that's cool. Let's be honest this is a kick butt bluegrass song.
3) Calypso - John Denver
Oh yes John was dominating the TV and radio airwaves and you know what, he deserved it and really still does. "Windsong" is still an "AWESOME" album. Of course he was have a great live video for this song.
4) Eagle Man : Changing Woman - Buffy Sainte-Marie
"Changing Woman" was in Lori's collection, and her two MCA albums were called "more adventurous arrangements and production." and this song is a great indication. Here's a nice fan video.
5) Black Friday - Steely Dan
"Katy Lied" was absorbed into the collection along the way and their fourth album was both successful and disappointing for to Becker and Fagen.
6) Brown Eyed Handsome Man - Taj Mahal
This "Music Keeps Me Together" was again absorbed from a warehouse corner, but his raggae version of Chuck Berry's song is an incredible find for this playlist. You know Chuck was writing about brown skin too, but I'll take the compliment since I'm a brown eyed man.
7) Well May The World Go - Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie
Well we were lucky in the later 70's to see Pete and Arlo live at the Milwaukee Summerfest. So many song to pick from their live album. Yep it was a lot like this: (turn it up audio is soft on this video)
8) Send in the Clowns - Judy Collins
"Judith" who would know that this song is now 50 years old. Yes 1975 pop music had such range of beauty and musical styles. Here she is years later looking as gorgeous later in her years and oh my what an orchestra.
9) Pinball Wizard - The Who w/Elton John
Dang when I saw "Tommy" was released in 1975, while the song was first released by The Who in 1969, I was looking forward to this video with Elton. Right these posts take me forever because I watch sooo many videos until the end. Fun fact from Wikipedia:
"Pinball Wizard" was a major hit when released as a single. This sequence in the film depicts Elton John being backed by the Who (dressed in pound-note suits); the band portrayed the Pinball Wizard's band for filming,[123] but on the music track and soundtrack album, the music was performed entirely by him and his regular touring band.[121] Most of the extras were students at Portsmouth Polytechnic and were paid with tickets to a Who concert after filming wrapped.[124]
10) God Bless The Child - Billie Holiday
Yes it's odd to see Billie releasing new music in 1975, but this 4 record box set called "Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do" came out that year and somehow again it has showed up in my library. Funny how that happens.
11) Louisiana Lou And Three Card Monty John - The Allman Brothers Band
Ok it took until the 11th song to repeat an album, but I always loved Dickey Betts's song from "Win, Lose, Or Draw" and I don't care what the critics said.
12) Battle Of Sugar Creek Road - Robin & Linda Williams
Who would know that their first album came out in 1975; and you know me when I can get the rookie release I buy it. They went on to be standards on the Prairie Home Companion. Ok sometimes I give up when I can't find a song, but for this anniversary special; I decided if it wasn't out there I would add a quick mostly audio video. Of course the album does also include Peter Ostroushko too on Fiddle and Mandolin who was also an uncredited musician within "Deliverance" on the 1975 release of "Blood on the Tracks"
13) This Hotel Room- Steve Goodman
I want to stay in this room, and I think in my years I have; oh those magic fingers. "Jessie's Jigs" did appear in the first 50, but come on this is the legendary Steve Goodman. Sure the studio version isn't out there but got to love Steve live.
14) Lyin' Eyes - The Eagles
"One of These Nights"'s hit was a six minute song, and I never wondered until today how they cut it down to 4 minutes. Here's the sad tale... oh boy I say when you can listen to the album version.
15) Saginaw, Michigan - Jim Ringer
"Any Old Wind That Blows" is now my fourth record from Jim who died way too early. I love this cover.
16) Wheels - Emmylou Harris
"Elite Hotel" is of course one of Emmylou's best; and it's in my library because of merging my wife's library. Yes she loved Emmylou before I did. She's singing on this song with Herb Pederson one of the best studio musician of the era.
17) Carolina In The Pines - Michael Murphy
"Blue Sky-Night Thunder" makes it's second appearance because how could I not include both Wildfire and Carolina in the Pines?
18) Scofield Mine Disaster - Bruce Utah Phillips
"El Capitan" is chocked full of stories from the legend, here's one that doesn't get played enough; witnessed by the fact it wasn't out in YouTube. Plus I found Discogs page had it spelled wrong (google told me about it) so I fixed it.
19) The Boho Dance - Joni Mitchell
"The Hissing Of Summer Lawns" hasn't gotten enough play time in my library, so two songs were required.
20) Songbird - Jesse Colin Young
I really loved this record back in 1975; and of course still do so I welcome returning to a playlist like this one.
21) How Much Is That Doggy In The Window - Freddy Fender
Ha, I couldn't resist adding this song from the "Are You Ready For Freddy" album.
22) Keep On Churnin' - The Ozark Mountain Daredevils
I'm still getting used to owning "The Car Over The Lake Album", but I'll keep churning through it. Yes it's one of their rockers.
23) Mississippi Lady - Jim Croce
"The Faces I've Been" unreleased gems including one that easily stands next to all of Jim's story songs.
24) Crying, Waiting, & Hoping - Dave Mason
"Split Coconut" has this great Buddy Holly cover from Dave with a beach calypso feel; and yes it's the other studio album that also features Jim Krueger who was the guitarist from my hometown of Manitowoc WI.
25) Lost Up in Loving You - Kenny Rankin
Ok I have my limits, only two songs at most from a record. "Inside"'s "Sunday Kind of Love" was in Volume Two, and that leaves out "Roll Around" "She's a Lady" and "Creepin"... all favorites too. I guess I'm a little lost up in love with this album.
Ah... right if you think it takes a while to get through this list, that's why there are three volumes and the next one will be around the corner. Enjoy the one click playlist. (ha.. you might be asked halfway through if you are still listening)
