Dave's Music #142 Kerrville New Folk Vol 2

In the previous blog, I started counting backward and said I had 33 artists in my library up to 1990, I lied I found more as I was writing this post.  So there are more than 11 to catch up, and maybe I'll keep going until the end too.  For reference again, click here is the historical list of winners.

Here's the list that I'm listening too, let's see what I can find in Bandcamp & YouTube, we might have to swap some songs.

1) Ordinary Love - Ellis Delaney (formerly just Ellis)  2013 Winner

I've had a chance to see Ellis at the Great River Folk Fest in the past, but the song I picked I couldn't find anywhere so I'll be buying this song (if not the album) on December Bandcamp Friday.

2) My Everything - Edie Carey - 2012 Winner

Too funny I saw both Edie and The Sea The Sea (song 3)  at the Storyhill Fest and they were both 2012 winners.  Edie has just one older album in Bandcamp, and you know me... it doesn't get stale, it has no expiration date.

3) In the Altogether - The Sea The Sea - 2012 Winner

I've had a chance to see this duo twice, Trempealeau Hotel and the Storyhill Fest.  Love them live and YES there was a video for this song.

4) The Gypsy Code - Grace Pettis 2011 Winner

I'm a follower/patreon of Grace, and had a chance to meet her too at the Great River Folk Fest.  While she has a Bandcamp page, this older song was not there to add to the post.  I'm lucky though that there is a video with her dad.  I don't throw out heroes too often, but I have tremendous respect for Pierce.

5) $20 Bill (For George Floyd) - Rebecca Loebe - 2009 Cover

Funny I picked her covering a Tom Prasada-Rao who is a 1993 Kerrville winner on a special release that was an email campaign I believe.  She does have a Bandcamp page I'll stop back and visit later.  So since I can't find this cover; how about her singing a Dylan tune.

And here is Tom playing the song:

6) Snare Drum - Lucy Wainwright-Roche 2009 Winner

Now it's not fair to even have genes like this enter a contest, and yes she won.  I truly don't have enough of her music and more of her parents, but I have a good sampling.  And YES another live video of the song.

7) Runs in the Family - Devon Sproule - 2008 Winner

I bought Devon's older album because Carsie Blanton covered one of her song "Warning Bell"  Here's a cover of The Roches song. (So appropriate to follow Lucy eh? I didn't even plan it.)

And her live singing it.

8) Grampa Built Bridges - Danny Schmidt - 2007 Winner

He and Johnsmith first came to mind when I started this list because I was lucky enough to schedule John, Danny and Humbird in a song swap (ALL THREE New Folk Winners) at the Great River Folk Fest.  Songwriting at it's finest.  Of course I picked a song / album not in Danny's rich Bandcamp library, but I found a live recording of it.

9)  Full Circle - Storyhill - 2007 Winner

Yes I've mentioned them quite a bit in the blog, and I picked a song from the VIP  Thursday night concert, such a great memory... I highly recommend you try out the fest and a VIP slot at least once.

10)  Dublin Boys - Antje Duvekot - 2006 Winner

A 2009 release so this is around when she won.  I'm not sure how I ended up with this CD in my collection but I imported it in 2016.

11) Meeting Mairghread - Jud Caswell - 2006 Winner

Just a touch of an Irish song from a musician I've been following since I was in MySpace.

12) Love is on to You - Beth Wood - 2005 Winner

Yikes I did not know Beth and David Stoddard were winners, AND in the same year.  No wonder they have formed a bond and yes they are highlighted on the Bluff View Concert Treats album.  I believe Beth's album is in my collection because I was part of her kickstarter, so I can't find the song in YouTube or Bandcamp, so here's a great video of her live.

13) My Town - David Stoddard - 2005 Winner

Like I said these two tour a lot together and neither is on Bandcamp, oh well them you get to see them live which is a treat.

14) Ol' Buick - Claudia Nygaard - 2004 Winner

Just love this song.  Claudia gifted me her album as she was traveling through WI in 2019, and I probably haven't listened to it enough.

So yes I love the song enough for BC link AND a video.
