DBT #232 Sarah King - 2023 Great River Folk Fest Songwriter Winner

As the sponsor for the Cash prizes, I've been mirroring the posts from the Great River Folk Fest blog through out the contest.  Let's give it up for Sarah King!  Active followers might have heard about Sarah because this is the Sixth Time she has hit the blog.  So here's the post with my DBT additions.

Well a great year of songs is now in the books and we can say that the finals was such a treat.  Annie Bacon traveled over to WI from MI for her first visit, Sarah extended her Vermont to Montana tour adding a few more memorable stops, and Alex crossed the Mississippi to make it to the fest at 11:30 Sunday morning.  Yes, we're sorry to put pressure on them to wake up and get those vocal pipes going so early, but it really works for the scheduling, and then the winner gets to play two more times to make sure everyone sees them once.  As the host, I didn't take any pictures or videos of the contest, and I do feel sorry for that; but I somewhat made up for it by taking two videos of Sarah King the WINNER!  Plus I got our Adventures in Americana's photographer, Keely Zynda to take this incredible picture in the fest's "Green Room"

Plus, we didn't give the judges or the contestants much time between the end of the contest and the next time the winner had to sing... about a half hour.  I do want to thank our morning judges Tom Walter, Jenna Smith, Eddie Allen, and Fran Felton.  Eddie was so alert he noted we had Bacon and Toast... so I did jokingly called Sarah "Eggs" King.  I doubt if that nickname will last.

So now,  buy Sarah's music or follow her on your favorite platform (even if it's Spotify) and make sure you make it to the fest in 2024 to hear a full set of music.

Here's Sarah opening for last year's winner, Andy Baker:

Here's the recorded version of Poison:

Of course let's give Andy some love on his return trip to LaCrosse from MI:

Sarah and Andy both opened later for our closing act "The Mayer Brothers"; here's very nice and dark song from Sarah on the bandshell.

Nightstand was a favorite that also pushed me to review Sarah's album back in August 2022, where I jokingly said, "Don't cross this woman".  Here is the studio version:

For all you NPR listeners (like me) out there... Sarah also got on to one of my favorite radio shows, Marketplace:

We would like to thank our Sponsors:
