DBT #317 Midnight
As I was adding a few songs to the digital library from cd's I was gifted from Marv (a regular for my house concert series), I noted I was adding two songs with Midnight. Two infamous blues songs were on the "All About the Blues" compilation and it got me thinking. Yes I have over 60 songs in the digital library before even thinking about searching my Discogs library for more to import. That's core for a great playlist. These are the songs I picked... no I passed on Midnight Special, but there are classics and unknown songs in the list.
Let's see what I can find to share with you:
1) Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys Knight & the Pips
Such a sweet way to start.
2) In the Midnight Hour - Mary Wells
I thought maybe Mary was first, but Wilson Pickett recorded his original song in 1965, and Mary covered it in 1966, Still a great cover.
3) Across the Midnight Sea - Erik Koskinen
From Erik's recent album "Down Street / Love Avenue" has this gem on it; as my wife said in the car listening to the playlist "Well that's a different sound for Erik"
4) After Midnight - Maggie Bell
I love how this video describes the 1974 JJ Cale cover as one from Britian's Janis Joplin. Yes this song appeared in my 1974 50th Anniversary list.
5) Jack's Midnight Ghost - Haymakers
I saw this Wichita KS group a few years back in a Twin Cities concert that we went up there to see Erik Koskinen. Here you go GHOSTS at Midnight... very cool song for the playlist.
6) Crying at Midnight - Rick Vito
I forget exactly why I have Rick's album in my Bandcamp collection, but it's great and I love the fact that he was part of Fleetwood Mac's history.
Plus a great live video too.
7) Dark Dream Midnight - Catherine Maclellan
I really should have more of this Canadian artist in my library.
8) Lady Midnight - Leonard Cohen
I promised you a few classics.
9) Midnight on the Water - Kate Wolf
Alright, this is a folk classic one in our family. As it came on in the car, Lori reached over to turn it up.
10) Midnight Rain - Taylor Swift
I reached over to skip this one for my wife, she's not ready for drum track sound of the pop classic from Taylor. I too wouldn't mind if she came back and did and unplug Folklore type covers of her own songs.
11) Midnight Rider - Gregg Alman
I choose the version from his first solo album; I know another classic and for the playlist. How about a video that is star studded?
12) Soon After Midnight - Bob Dylan
When I saw this come up in the search, I wasn't that familiar with song from Tempest; I'm glad I added it. I love how he used those short little rhymes in the verse beginnings. It's a slow dancer.
13) Round Midnight - D.C. Anderson
This classic song from Thelonious Monk was covered by D.C. who keeps me supplied with all of his releases.
14) Walkin' after Midnight - Kimber Manning
While I also have a great cover of the Patsy Cline hit by the Cowboy Junkies, Kimber's version was recently imported from a cd collection I inherited. It's a great cover by a lady that I don't much about Kimber and even Google only found this old page.
15) Forever Midnight - Molly Healey
Like I've said many times, these playlists give me reasons to listen to music I've bought and just haven't spent enough time with. Boy I love the talented Molly Healey who I discovered through Moccasin Creek Festival.
16) Eight is Midnight - Rose River
How could I not put my cowrite with my buddy Tim Kolek? This song isn't out in YouTube so it's from my first digital release that I was going under the pen name Dave Zeman. It is so funny to me now because it assumes everyone is partying longer because someone moved the hands back on the clock four hours. Yes this was written before everyone just checks the time on their phone. Yes Rose River rocked many a night at the Freight House in LaCrosse, we were a great cover band but did slip in this original almost every time.
