DBT #345 25th Anniversary to 2000 Music V2
Today I had an hour round trip to get a crown put on my tooth, and I reached for a playlist and I choose the 2000 25th Anniversary Volume Two. I thought I need to share this and let's shake it up and start with Volume 2, kind of a count up to the first volume that you might think are my favorites. We'll see when we're done. So I kind of announced these playlists in Volume Four of the 50th Anniversary, and come on aren't we all still thinking about the 50th SNL Show? It feels time to fast forward 25 years, and why not their 50th Anniversary show spent more time in the last 25 then in the first 25 years.
1) Goodbye - Tom Landa and The Paperboys
The Paperboys from when Kendel Carson was playing with them.
2) Sailing to Philadelphia - Mark Knopfler & James Taylor
One of the songs that my wife pauses every time it comes on in the car and says "that is such a great song", and now an awesome video interpretation of it. Come on a duet with James, classy guitar work, and the story going back and forth between Mason and Dixon. Definitely one of my top all time favorite songs, yes it's been played over 8 hours by itself since I've added it to the library.
3) Full Moon AM - Lojo Russo & Funks Grove
I was gifted this album after Lojo played the Bluff View House Concerts. I love this song it has a great groove that reminds me of 70's music; a classy flute and and creative congas. It is out in Bandcamp and now I put it up on YouTube so it can be in the one click playlist at the end.
4) When I Get to the Border - Linda Thompson & Richard Thompson
Well it was a best of the Thompsons but it was about when I added it to the library.
5) I Won't Back Down - Johnny Cash & Tom Petty
The third American recording release, so many to pick from but this is my favorite cover of the Petty song.
6) God's Golden Eyes - John Hiatt
I recently filled this 2000 hole in my John Hiatt collection; and "Crossing Muddy Waters" is a great album. This song has such great interplay of acoustic instruments, maybe even an alto mandolin?
7) Americano - The Brian Setzer Orchestra
Oh my I played the dickens out of this song; this is an incredible live video... Americano in Japan. Ha.
8) At The Turning Of The Year - Herdman Hills And Mangsen
A little whiplash back to some great folk music by an incredible trio of ladies. This song is a second time in the blog, it's also appeared in DBT #156 Happy New Year
9) Hey Conductor - Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer
Keeping it folky; one of Dave's fun dance songs, love the folk songs blended into the song.
10) Wings of Wonder - Claudia Schmidt
Another folk legend pounding on her dulcimer while two other legends Pete Ostroushko & Dean Magraw joining in.
11) You Move Me -Gordon Kennedy, Wayne Kirkpatrick, Phil Madeira, Billy Sprague
A very cool cd that has according to Wikipedia "Later in 2000, he teamed up with Kennedy and several other songwriters (Phil Madeira and Billy Sprague) to record Coming From Somewhere Else, which was a CD of their own music that had previously been recorded by other artists,"
This song was written by Gordon Kennedy & (a hero) Pierce Pettis.
12) Old - Paul Simon
Here's what Wiki had to say about the album "You're the One" - "You're the One is the tenth solo studio album by the American singer-songwriter Paul Simon, released in 2000 by Warner Bros. Records. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2001, with Simon becoming the first artist to be nominated in that category in five consecutive decades (1960s–2000s). (In 2006, Paul McCartney became the only other artist to match this feat with Chaos and Creation in the Backyard)."
Geez the 1975 playlist had Simon's "Still Crazy after all the Years" winning a Grammy, and this one he's nominated. Must be pretty good, or has friends on the committee after all these years? You know he was old then and way older now, plus I love the groove of this song.
13) Hallelujah For The Getaway - Sons Of The Never Wrong
I inherited a collection of folk cds that had a bunch of Sons; and really was amazed since I first ran into them a couple years back in a Great River Folk Fest song submission. Love how Trigger saves his ass.
14) Forty Years Old And I'm Living In My Moms Garage - Austin Lounge Lizards
Ok so the video is pretty recent, and they went back to the 2000 song as they were celebrating their 40th anniversary of playing together. Ok then I only have one cd by them, I'll have to fix that; Discogs will show me the way.
15) My Kinda Man - Four Bitchin' Babes
Keeping it kind of funny, I believe I resemble their kind of guy. And of course this album cover should win a parody award.
16) Blues Go Walking - Greg Brown
"Covenant" has blues sound thanks to Bo Ramsey, oh Greg someone's out of their night gown?
17) I Hope You Dance - Lee Ann Womack Feat. Sons Of The Desert
Nope I don't know totally why this Grammy winning song is in my library, but I'm glad for it. Yes it is currently my only album of hers, so I might have to fix that some day.
18 Abuelita - Richard Shindell
Another talented folk singer that I don't have enough of in my library.
19) Ramblin' 'Round - Indigo Girls & Ani Difranco
Must have a great concert in 1996 that produced a 2000 release album "Til We Outnumber 'Em" You can still buy it and support the Woody Guthrie Foundation. In today's world we need more Fascists killing songwriters out there.
20) Thrasher - Stephen Fearing
Another inherited cd, and this Canadien folk singer knocks out a Neil Young cover out of the ballpark, or the puck out of the rink, eh? Now this is the studio version, and my playlist has tight emotional solo live cut.
21) Please Call Home - Allman Brotthers
Ok I guess I could have picked a different song, because I just posted this song on #344 Home, but it's my blog and I love this song.
22) Invisible & Free - Don Dixon
I'm not sure why I have bought this song in the library; 2000 I did share a YouTube library with my son, maybe he bought it. I do love the songwriting in the song.
23) Souvenirs - Gretchen Peters
Ah the 2000's when I would buy a single song, and be done with an artist; oh well that's not completely true I have another 6 songs from various albums. She's good maybe I should get something official in the library along the line. After listening to her do the song acoustic, now I know why I bought it. I love getting famous songs by the original writers, yes I own the Suzy Bogguss; and will see her again at the Moccasin Creek Fest in June.
24) Never So Far - Greg Brown
While the "In the Hills of California" was officially released in 2004, iTunes told me this song was recorded in 2000 so it made the playlist. Just Greg and a guitar is such a classic song, but this was at the Kate Wolf Festival so you know it's likely Nina Gerber sitting in with him adding electric guitar texture.
25) Down To The River To Pray - Alison Krauss
Yes, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" will be on both volumes of our 25th Anniversary celebration. Let's end this playlist with the all time classic. Now if I could have found a clip from the movie, that's what I would be sharing. You likely know me well enough, here's a live cut of Alison singing it with the band and not the siren angels from the movie. Alison is truly prayers answered human.
Ok, you know when I publish the next 25 songs, I'll put a link to it here and there and everywhere.
Here's the one click playlist in YouTube.
