When I picked up Dolly Parton's "Eagle When She Flies" album it got me interested in dusting off my Family songs; and yes it's been over 100 editions a since #237 Family so let's open up our arms and embrace our families for whatever they represent they are still family. If you like the art in the playlist picture, wait I'll put the story at the end.
1) Family - Dolly Parton
"Eagle When She Flies" was a return for Dolly to the number album spot and this song she co-wrote with Carl Perkins; and it's so true.
When it's family, you forgive them For they know not what they do When it's family, you accept them 'Cause you have no choice but to When it's family, they're a mirror Of the worst and best in you And they always put you to the test And you always try to do your best And just pray for God to do the rest When it's family
2) Family - Pierce Pettis
The first playlist had Dar Williams covering this masterpiece written by Pierce. I'm very surprised that Pierce's cut is no where in YouTube; so unless he tells me to pull it down here's his studio version from his 1993 album "Chase the Buffalo" (You don't own it? At the time of writing this post there are 26 copies available for sale on Discogs, and not on his website)
3) Family Tree - Merry Weathers
I don't know if it was a joke, but I'm sure I might have said if you covered one of my songs it would mean I would have to book you for a Bluff View House Concert. They did and I booked them only to have Covid cancel it, and then the band broke up. I loved how they reimagined the song. Yes the first playlist has the Pigtown Fling Stringband covering it more the way I wrote it; but I love them both equally.
4) Family Tree - Shakey Graves
How dare Shakey write a song with the same title of mine? Ha.
5) Family Name - Sandra McCracken
Yep spending time in Ancestry.com and quickly you wonder about family name's carrying on or dying away. I am a broken record "boy I love that this song is in the playlist".
6) This is My Family - Leela & Ellie Grace
Truly I love this song it was also featured on Sibling Harmonies #36, so because of that both a live recording and the studio version are on the playlist at the end, but here's the studio version. You'll need to either go to #36 or to the playlist at the end to see the live cut.
7) Family Revival - John McCutcheon
I don't know how I didn't know this song from this CD I picked up in Oct 2022... it's so fun. Weird settings, you can listen here but it can't be in the playlist at the end.
8) Family Bible - Willie Nelson & Johnny Cash
From a cool CD of the two of the sharing songs two voices and two guitars.
9) Family Tradition - Hank Williams Jr.
Well most people know this one, and yes I do have some country hits in the library.
10) The Family Guns - Jack Browning
Yep I bought this great new song that sounds like an update of an old Marty Robbins song on Bandcamp in December 2023.
11) Family Fued - Levi Weaver
Thanks to doing this playlist I'm rediscovering Levi, and will buy more of his music on Bandcamp. He's recorded it several different ways. This is close to the one I own from his "One Man Band" album.
Of course when you watch the video, you also think about doing your family tree too.
Ok if you want to know the story behind the post's graphic, I tried desperately to have AI in Abobe's Stock Photos or Photoshop to create a simple Family stitched on fabric. It came up with beautiful images but would say White Family or Hispanic Family. So then I tried Dave's Family Songs, and it never spelled songs right, and ultimately I liked the one I had above, but I had to eliminate Hispanic from between Dave and Family; and Family was spelled Familiy so I had to get rid of the extra I..... geez what I do for entertainment.
