DBT #359 Hey Cowboy
Yee Haw... let's thank Kasey Musgrave's Grammy winner "Golden Hour" for the push start for this truly fun playlist. I only want to put legends next to friends, MySpace finds next to YouTube favorites, and then gay country singer between two beautiful ladies, and if I do I've made a perfect playlist. It would have stopped at 15 songs, but I had to put Willie and Waylon's "Mama don't let your babies"... you know the rest say it with me... COWBOYS! Here's my playlist that I truly hope you browse and enjoy.
1) Space Cowboy - Kacey Musgraves
Until I added Golden Hour to the library, the only song I had with Kasey was a duet with John Prine. This song was her first single released from what would become her Grammy winning album.
2) Cornerstone Cowboy - Mary McCaslin
If you follow the blog you know I love Mary as a legend in folk music.
3) Cosmic Cowboy - Michael Murphy
When I searched "Cowboy" in the library there were a few songs that were a must in case I never do Volume two. All time favorite sing with me "I just want to be a Cosmic Cowboy, I just want to Ride and Rope and Hoot!" Only better is if you run into a Cosmic Cowgirl. Actually very surpised I only found an audio file from the album. Love this song.
4) Long Island Cowboy - Abbie Gardner & Andy DeCosta
Here's where I pause and say... how special is it to upload a song written by Abbie who ultimately shared it with her Red Molly band. For now, I'm going to share Red Molly. Abbie has been selected for a 2025 Kerrvile New Folk Finalist.... good luck I've been loving Abbie since the MySpace days and this song in the playlist proves this. (Yes I still might come back and add the song to YouTube)
5) John Wayne Cowboy - The Trishas
Of course if The Trishas come up in the search, they are in the playlist. I just don't listen to them enough, and yes they are mostly mothers who have decided to stop touring.
6) This Ol' Cowboy - The Marshal Tucker Band
I just bought "Where We Belong" though I was confident I owned this in my youth. Yes I'm working on a Southern Rock playlist. Here they are live with the song:
7) Flexible Cowboy Man - Wolf Van Elfmand
Dang I love this song and wow a great video too! Plus, I forget to listen to Music for Minors Ages 3 to 300 so this playlist was a great reminder. I met Wolf through Luke Callen since they were part of the infamous Von Stomper.
8) Broken Down Cowboy - John Fogerty
"Bad News in a Pickup Truck" probably one of the great line.
9) Real Smooth Cowboy - Jetty Road
Not sure why I bought this single back in 2007, but I think it was a recommendation that Lucky Dog would cover it. I'm just glad I'm listening to this rocker again; and those ladies are pretty good pool sharks too. Ha. Now I put a few of their cd's in my Discogs wantlist so I won't forget them again.
10) The Cowboy Said - Rick Thompson
Lately I don't skip over songs that won't be available in YouTube, I just fix that. A local friend a great songwriter wrote some wise words that a cowboy told him; so it was fun to put it to a video. (yes it's low res so I could upload it from home)
11) I Wanna Be A Cowboy - Miss Tess
Ok so I love this song so much it has showed up before in the blog, "It's a Job" Edition no. 27 then I used a more full band video. A trio is all Tess needs to pull of this great western swing song and the album is one of her best!
12) Ride Me Cowboy - Paisley Fields
Of course if you can plan a cowboy playlist with a queer country singer, you do it.
13) Cowboy Tex - Ariane Lydon
Here's another LaCrosse songwriter who has a rich travel history documented here by WPR. She had a great song that had to be included in the playlist, but also didn't exist in YouTube. So I'm hoping that this fan video gets approved and doesn't get her or Brett Huus mad at me. If it does, I'll slip in a different song on the playlist and we'll not talk about it again. Ha.
14) Are You A Real Cowboy - Sally Barris
I met Sally when she and the Waymores played the Great River Folk Fest. Love that I found this great live cut of the song from 2015.
15) Roving Cowboy - Steve Goodman
Ok this took some fan to upload a video that even had Jim Post comment on it. So cool; RIP Jimmy David Post. I love how he did the video, I might have to steal that idea.
16) Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys - Waylon & Willie
I almost stopped at 15 songs, but I felt this had to be the closer. Just recently picked up this vinyl from buying Michael Tyler's collection. Now grab the guitar and play along.
