DBT #382 Licensed to Feel
What started with Blair Borax's "Hide Your Ammo" as my playlist generator, I saw a playlist about guns, killing or the line she used in the song, "Licensed to kill." As it went along, it became much more touchy feely songs that many times I would not be sliding into a playlist. (Love & breakup stories I find boring, mostly so don't tell Taylor Swift.)
So officially I have licensed you to feel angry, bitter, sad, intrigued, or just bored for these story songs.
From Blair's sophomore release "Tender Lately" that came with a package of all three vinyls of her library of releases. What a great kickstarter package, yes I just couldn't refuse. I love the texture of this song.
2) Spanish Armada - Corb Lund
Speaking of texture, put your headphones and let the left guitar work opposite the cell on the right. Of course this song was selected while I thinking about weaponry; but again a woman appears in the song verse two. Yep I scored this vinyl on a past Bandcamp Friday, I really love how Corb writes.
I got this vinyl from the ladies, they are so much fun. No Bandcamp link to buy their music, and while there was an audio video in YouTube; this live cut from the Dakota is incredibly good sound and video. Funny I've struggled getting good video in there, so they ladies must have gotten it from their captured recording devices.
I got this song from Hear Music Vol. 5 a cool compilation cd . I scored it for $1 in a resale store in Bayfield. Another song with such great texture, and story. Of course the story is master class writing because it's written by Shel Silverstein. The song originally came out in 1979 on "Broken English". Yes I've added it to my Wantlist. The video in the playlist at the end of this post will include just an audio version because of the settings of this cooler video; please enjoy.
5) Long Gone Don Juan - The Rebel Eves
Yes this song was a Monday Morning Song, but I love it and fits the story theme of the playlist.
I love when I get to share both the studio version from Bandcamp, and an acoustic video too. If you have read the blog before, this is the type of mix I love because the harmonies just shine right through the smoking gun.
Now I know Lori & I have been binging "Younger" and so I didn't surprise me that when I watched this video I could see Grace Theisen as Sutton Foster, and Katie Pederson as Hillary Duff. Jilian Linklater who wrote the song just looks like girlfriend from High School. Yikes. When Grace moved her hair to more blonde, she has been told she looks like Hannah Einbinder from Hacks. Yes another show we binge a few times, and she does too. I know I watch enough TV in retirement I could write a blog about that as well.
I jumped at the chance to get their limited edition vinyl in their Kickstarter and it's absolutely wonderful. While their Bandcamp page has three of the singles from the album it doesn't have this song yet. Emma and Bella's music has taken a huge leap recently, and they are still so young.
I love these two individually and as a duo. Yes I had a chance to see them do their first tour together too. Here's their first single and will make you feel nostalgic for hometown that just aren't the same anymore.
Since they haven't put this into Bandcamp, I'm going to share two videos. Right, you know I love the acoustic ones almost the best. Their duo page is so new... give them some love and subscribe to it too.
I recently added Mindy's rookie debut album to the library, need more.
9) Do You Dare - Rachel Laven
Right I dared to put at least one country rocker in this playlist, and Rachel is so much fun. Love that I discovered her music while she was a finalist at the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest songwriter contest.
She rocks even if she's solo on a stage... go Rachel dare us to feel.
Lyal is such a great storyteller, and you know I love when the artist puts their lyrics in Bandcamp:
Quarter million dollars don’t buy that much
Gonna need another hundred more to keep my daddy’s place up
Three years of taxes have gone unpaid And my girl pulls her weight as a hotel maid
I left the farm for a year or two Bought a half education that I never use
Papers in the desk where I never sit, Got a whole new group of associates
Chorus:
But you can’t spend your way out of nothing
That’s a big hole and you’ll never climb out
But if you’ve got a long handle on that shovel in your hands
You might hit rock and you’ll know where you stand
Gonna need another hundred more to keep my daddy’s place up
Three years of taxes have gone unpaid And my girl pulls her weight as a hotel maid
I left the farm for a year or two Bought a half education that I never use
Papers in the desk where I never sit, Got a whole new group of associates
Chorus:
But you can’t spend your way out of nothing
That’s a big hole and you’ll never climb out
But if you’ve got a long handle on that shovel in your hands
You might hit rock and you’ll know where you stand
Yes we met Lyal (and his mom) at SERFA, and he sounds like this solo. My wife says he reminds her of Greg Brown.
11) Cruel Mother - A Different Thread
Another duo that we met at SERFA, and yes they are my wishlist for a Bluff View house concert. While they write wonderful songs, they have great tastes in traditional music covers too.
It didn't surprise my to find they had a perfectly eerie video for this song too. They are artistically creative as well as musically talented.
12) Misery - Kathleen Parks
Kathleen is the lead vocalist in the Twisted Pine, and her solo release is wonderfully eclectic musically and lush storytelling.
Misery walks through the halls of likeness
Silently waiting with a smile on
But when she turns the corner she starts crying
No one can hear her sad sad song
Life it is short but for her it was shorter
Just before leaving her studies behind
Struck down in a moment most vulnerable
Finishing off the last of her kind
Silently waiting with a smile on
But when she turns the corner she starts crying
No one can hear her sad sad song
Life it is short but for her it was shorter
Just before leaving her studies behind
Struck down in a moment most vulnerable
Finishing off the last of her kind
13) No Kings In America - Lisa Bastoni
Now is a perfect time to feel pissed at out government. While we had a difficult President, where are the checks and balances from congress and the judicial branch. Lisa captures it perfectly, and proceeds from any purchases go to the ACLU. Here is what Lisa wrote:
I’ve been an avid reader of Heather Cox Richardson’s Letters From an American newsletter for years, and especially in recent months. I haven’t written many explicitly political songs, and lately I’ve felt too overwhelmed by the news to write much of anything. One night, after watching a live chat with Heather Cox Richardson and Representative Jasmine Crockett, I felt inspired to do something - and there is truly something for everyone to do at this moment. I sat down at my kitchen table with my guitar, and this song spilled out.
A few days after writing “No Kings in America,” I played it live for the first time in a new (to me) area, far from my blue home state of Massachusetts. I was a little worried about how it would go over. “No Kings in America” was met with a standing ovation, and with folks coming up to me after the show to say, “Thank you for putting into words exactly what I’m feeling.” I’m so glad I took a chance and played this song. I am happy to share it with you today. I hope it resonates and gives you the courage of knowing that you are not alone. Every little brave thing we do adds up, and we are all in this together. If ever there was a time to resist and speak out, it is now.

14) The Heart Must Pay The Price - Mike Ward
Mike and his co-writer captured what it feels to say goodbye.
When you’re close I feel the heat
My surrender is complete
No doubt and no deceit
No way out, no retreat
The light upon your face
The glory and the grace
No bindings to unlace
The glory and the grace
My surrender is complete
No doubt and no deceit
No way out, no retreat
The light upon your face
The glory and the grace
No bindings to unlace
The glory and the grace
Here they are playing it in a living room.
15) No Ammunition - Gwil Owen
I got this song off of a compilation album from Bloodshot records. Yes the bluesy harp, the ammunition ties to ammo at the beginning are perfect to close the playlist. Of course I have put his album "Last Man On The Moon" on my wantlist.
Yes even if you haven't seen a video for a song in the list above, they are included in this ONE click playlist.
