DBT #404 Gold
Ok while the picture might get you ready for Christmas playlist, it's all about gold. Today I wished Kendel Carson a happy birthday message and told her I needed to listen to her music today. Of course that meant a playlist. I think I found Kendel first as the fiddle player in The Paperboys. She played with them a few years and she became a musical obsession 2008-2013 on my Zemmy Show blog; and yes that was when I was networking on MySpace. I even have Kendel's cd "Rearview Mirror Tears" that she put out on Chip Taylor's label, she signed it "MySpace Rules ;-) Thanks for the encouragement." Kendel mostly stays in her beloved Canada (thanks governments for not making it easy to cross the border for musicians) so I do lose track of her. Still wish that some day I see Belle Starr, a three piece all woman band that toured for a short time back in 2012-13; US Reunion tour?
So one of my favorite Kendel songs off of Rearview Mirror Tears was "Gold in the Hills (of Saltery Bay)" and that was worth a shot of searching gold since I also had a great conversation with a musician who turned into a gold miner in Nevada just the night before, and was just done decorating the tree in silver and gold. (Really I talked to the Gold Nugget Man but that's another story.) I was again floored how many songs I had to pick from to curate this playlist. I hope you enjoy and that I don't have to upload too many to YouTube for you to listen.
1) Gold in the Hills (of Saltery Bay) - Kendel Carson
First Saltery Bay is part of British Columbia where yes there were gold rushes. Now it would be more rare just like my Gold Nugget man is looking for today in Nevada. Now you could listen to the studio version of the song here, but I'll watch the acoustic duo anytime.
2) Band of Gold - Greg Brown
The master paints a story of wonderful couple a few years before he got divorced, then watch for the other side of the story.
3) All That Is Gold - Prairie Smoke
I figured putting this legendary LaCrosse folk band in the playlist, I might have to upload an audio video for you to listen. The rest of the album is great, maybe more songs will be uploaded in the future.
4) After the Gold Rush - Prelude
I have a bunch of covers of this Neil Young song, but this is the one I heard first and ultimately the Trio used to base their cover too. Incredibly lucky this live cut was out in YouTube.
5) Band of Gold - Leslie Alexander
Another Canadian I met back in the MySpace days.
6) Gold - Emmylou Harris
When I saw this song, I picked it because I wasn't very familiar with it and you can never go wrong with an Emmylou song from a 2008 album, "All I Intended to Be". After I did I found Dolly Parton and Vince Gill are singing harmonies.
7) Gold Rush Goddess - Melody Walker
I've got this song from Melody from three different recordings she's done, I picked the one she used as a the title track to her solo release. Love the art, keep shaking what God gave you Melody.
8) Gold Wedding Ring - Andy Hughes
I'll have to ask if his dad if he really passed down a gold ring to Andy. Oh shoot I don't have too; Andy has stories behind each song on YouTube.
9) Golden Heart - Mark Knopfler
Of course I don't know why specifically I bought this from Apple music back in 2014 when it was released in 1996, but I'm pretty sure it was because it's Mark why not? I would have loved to be in the balcony for this concert.
10) Golden State of Mind - Molly Tuttle
Yep that's a DBT playlist to go from a 1996 recording to one from 2025.
Love she was determined not just to upload audio videos to YouTube. In case you are curious like me, she stays in this wig throughout this song; but she makes up for it with other songs:
11) Golden Ring - Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Anna & Kate McGarrigle
Not sure where I snagged this great compilation "Tammy Wynette Remembered" but this song is truly a gem. What's not to love from this fan video?
12) Gold Watch & Chain - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band w/Kris Kristofferson
Another song I have a bunch of covers including an original from the Carter family; this one is so good.
13) Fool's Gold - Them Coulee Boys
Wow it's been since 2014 that this was released. If you don't know by boys, look them up... their a great party band.
14) House of Gold - Patty Griffin
I am so happy I picked up this Grammy winning album "Downtown Church" during 2025. Of course, I have multiple covers of this song too; so you know that mean volume two someday.
15) People Come Here For Gold - Miss Tess and the
Let's rock you a little with this ditty from 2012.
My lucky day... what an AWESOME video ... got to love those band cut outs.
16) You Got Gold - John Prine
Two of my songwriting legends (Greg Brown & John Prine) made this playlist, so let's end it with John.
Because life should be simple and sometimes you want music in the background; here's a ONE Click YouTube playlist for the above songs.
