DBT #406 Another Prespective
As I sit writing this, I'm warming up from cleaning the snow off the drive and the solar panels while it was 7 degrees outside. Oh my fingers were in pain and I needed to come in several times to get the feeling back. Of course then it was too late to get to the 9:00 church service.
Then I looked at my music and saw "Holy, Holy, Holy" by Peter Mayer and he describes it as:
In 1861, John Bacchus Dykes wrote the melody for this song, which is known as "Nicaea". He wrote it as a musical setting for the original text by Reginald Heber which was written in 1826. I grew up singing that hymn in church, and always loved it. My version features the traditional melody but with my own text, which is my effort to write lyrics that feel resonant with present day cosmology.

Such began "Another Perspective" playlist. Here we go...
1) Holy, Holy, Holy - Peter Mayer
Holy, Holy, Holy
Holy wind around me
Holy sky above and
Holy ground beneath my feet
Over and below me
All the earth enfolds me
Shelters, holds me
Holy land and sea
Still not sure how this duo got on my Bandcamp wishlist, maybe it was this post?
What ever it was, I'm so glad it happened and added them to the library on BC Friday.
Baby, a great live video. They are going to be a great follow.
I’m your cold, spineless skeleton
Spoiled and desperate
The cancer you can’t live without
Critical and irrelevant
Boring and elegant
Poison you just won’t spit out
Spoiled and desperate
The cancer you can’t live without
Critical and irrelevant
Boring and elegant
Poison you just won’t spit out
A little ancient wisdom in the here and nowSome of that old religion not obsessed with powerGive me that good tradition where the meek are blessedThe prison gates swing open and the weary find their rest
5) Gates of Hell - Emily Nenni
If that makes me the devil
I'll greet you at the gates of Hell
I'll be the one punchin' the tickets
And weighin' your bags as well
I was young and I thought pain was
A symptom of bein' loved awful well
If that makes me the devil
I'll greet you at the gates of Hell
I'll greet you at the gates of Hell
I'll be the one punchin' the tickets
And weighin' your bags as well
I was young and I thought pain was
A symptom of bein' loved awful well
If that makes me the devil
I'll greet you at the gates of Hell
And he said: who would want a kiss from the farmers mistress?
Did you promise you would lie when you ran into his wife,
Did you promise you would lie when you ran into his wife,
when you locked him in the barn was he begging for his life
Did you give him the key or the edge of your knife
Did you give him the key or the edge of your knife
Found a fun live video!
I can hear your voice across the water
But that's nowhere near enough
Won't you fly across that ocean
Take a train on down
Because the night?s growing lonesome
In Charlemagne?s home town
The fortune teller told me nothing
That I wouldn't have found out on my own
She read my palm and she took my money
She looked at me with eyes of stone
She said the odds are long and stacked against us
Still we try because we must
To keep from leaving our senses
Swimming in a small pool
with the deepest of minds
And I heard what Dylan said
"finest school alright getting juiced in it"
Keeping my head above water
trying to be a good daughter
Heard those songs come down
on the river
Knowing my heart and my home
were my greatest teacher
with the deepest of minds
And I heard what Dylan said
"finest school alright getting juiced in it"
Keeping my head above water
trying to be a good daughter
Heard those songs come down
on the river
Knowing my heart and my home
were my greatest teacher
The Bird And The Cage has been recognized internationally as a Finalist in the 2025 Unsigned Only Music Awards (Sync category). It’s a haunting meditation on the vicious cycle of a toxic relationship.
She held him like a cactus
He smoked her like a pipe
A toxic dance fine-tuned by years of practice
And they're both still holding tight
After all these years together
Neither one could say
Who was the bird
He smoked her like a pipe
A toxic dance fine-tuned by years of practice
And they're both still holding tight
After all these years together
Neither one could say
Who was the bird
Who was the cage
A really nice live video...
10) The Last Bridge You Will Cross - Buddy & Julie Miller
featuring Emmylou Harris
"Congressman John Lewis led the 1965 crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge from Selma to
Montgomery, AL now known as Bloody Sunday. He was severely injured resulting in needing
a permanent plate in his head. His response was always love and forgiveness towards his
persecutors. July 17, 2020 I saw the crawl go by on TV announcing his passing. Many tears
fell and this song came. "-Julie
Go ahead John, it’s the last bridge
You will ever have to cross
Jesus waits there, on the other side
He saw how you paid the cost
There will never be another
Made of what God made you of
How your enemies stood down
With just the weapon of love
Go ahead son, it’s the last bridge
You will ever have to cross
Jesus waits there to embrace you
With all that once was lost
A great tribute video.
11) Tell Me True - Sarah Jarosz
Do you hum a little tune all day long?
Do you hear my name in the chorus of your song?
When you sing your song
Does it make you feel brand new?
Tell me, darling, please tell me true
Tell me, darling, please tell me true
Do you wonder why we live and why we die?
Do you wonder why we laugh and why we cry?
Do you wonder why we dance, and why we fall?
Tell me, darling, do you wonder these at all?
Cool a video from the live recording.
12) Soul Fly Free - Alice DiMicele
This is from her sampler cd she sent me.
She gives you an explanation quickly at the beginning of the video.
13) Must Be Seven - Billy Strings
Paper tearing off the walls, a rotten moldy sink
When he wandered to the counter just to fix himself a drink
Like there wasn't something wrong, like he couldn't see the sorrow in the song
And it must be seven years since he tipped his hat and told 'em all, "So long"
Well, she was so distracted by the color of the room
She never thought that she would see this brittle flower bloomin'
And take the cards that he was dealt
To build a house the big bad wolf could not blow down
And it must be seven years now, since they turned that life around
A very cool video!
14) Tear My Stillhouse Down (Feat. Lindsay Lou) - AJ Lee & Blue Summit
Put no stone at my head, no flowers on my tomb
No gold plated sign in a marble pillared room
The one thing I want when they lay me in the ground
When I die tear my stillhouse down
Oh tear my stillhouse down, let it go to rust
Don't leave no trace of the hiding place
Where I made that evil stuff
They do ok even without Lindsay Lou, AJ Lee is pretty talented and a good singer.
15) Now You Know - Anais Mitchell
When I think about dyingI think about childrenAnd when I think about childrenI think about youAnd when I think about youI feel like cryingCrying for my youth
16) Spirit Animal - Mooncats
Maybe you's a woodchuck,
Huck cut chuckin some wood
Fine feathered pheasant,
Eye of the neighborhood
Perhaps you's a pigeon,
Just spreading the news
Hear me out hound dog,
Just barking the blues
Huck cut chuckin some wood
Fine feathered pheasant,
Eye of the neighborhood
Perhaps you's a pigeon,
Just spreading the news
Hear me out hound dog,
Just barking the blues
You're my spirit animal
You're my spirit animal
Some weeks you got a beak
Some days you dig a hole
You're my spirit animal
Love this perspective on the song. Ha.
