DBT #415 Smile

Ok I did my first volume of 1976 songs followed by a Monday Morning Song post and I thought I probably should do a detailed review of Weary Ramblers or some other album or maybe just volume two of the 1976; BUT my love for playlists took over.  Now I really don't remember how the word Smile got into my search within my iTunes library; but quickly I noted I was going on a real adventure into the depths of my library.  Quickly I had the first 10, then 12 and finally 14 songs that I wanted to hear; so I knew this was a keeper.  Next step would be to find a stock photo and 1,000 of photos to choose from and some really beautiful people smiling.  None felt musically inspirational though, and I thought maybe go back to my first ideas.  Then I ran into a Facebook post from Adventures in Americana about the photos from Rosei Skipper, whom I recognized as a new friend I met at the Great River Folk Fest.  Her photo of Beth Bombara hit me as the SMILE photo I needed for this post.  She has so much fun playing music and it really comes across in her music and this picture.  I can't see Beth without thinking back to when I listened to her story of cutting her hair and living during the pandemic when it was about 1:30 in the morning at my first FARM conference.

Well a couple comments back and forth and BABY I had Rosei's permission to use the photo.

Rosie has a rich background and it was showcased in this article in Voyage Minnesota, which I hadn't read until I started doing this blog post.  Wow going from Hippy parents to Alabama to Minnesota while in medicine, to now being in the publicity and photography business.  My wife will tell you that I'm a flirt and especially when it comes to a lady photographer, and yes I'm always one to start up a conversation; but hey I love to talk to the guy photographers too.  I share all this because the last post I highlighted the photographer it was with the Moccasin Creek Festival's photographer, Tay.  I've claimed she was the lucky charm that got that post to be in my top 20 ALL-Time, over the two other posts I made about MCF.

Ok now that I had a picture I had to find a song from Beth that fit into the playlist.  I own all of the music that Beth has posted to Bandcamp and while she didn't have any song with smile in the title I found one that has the line, "Paint a smile on my face" so we're on, and it's a great slice of music between my 1976 journey.

The list is so eclectic, and yes I say that so often.  Now anyone can make a very unreal playlist in Spotify, but remember this is all music that I own, either bought and paid or gifted.  This one is GRADE AAA Eclectic, so let's dive into it.

Minnesota's Mark Knopfler in his 2010 release, "Keep it to Yourself"  DBT loves Erik Koskinen, this will be the 15th time he's graced the blog.

2) Smile - Peyton Tochterman

Ok I'm stumped to why I have only this song from Peyton in my library predating the 2013 when I reloaded my iTunes after it collapsed.  He's not in Bandcamp but I'll keep my watch out for him; and listening to this playlist will help; plus you know me I'm following his Facebook page. Oh by the way did I say, I clicked to listen to the song again after the years of not listening and said "Damn that's a good song".

Another MP3 pre-dating 2013, and it's wonderful.  I am now following the group on Bandcamp.  It could be when Dustin (my son) shared the music library but usually that meant I bought it iTunes and this one wasn't.  Until the mystery is solved, it's a great song and the video with those aliens is a must watch, and might just make you smile.

Pretty sure if Eleanor Whitmore told her Bandmate Steve Earle that, he would obey.  All you needed was to look her in the eyes and know, she's in charge.  Yep so lucky I had a chance to see the Whitmore Sisters live at a house concert in LaCrosse.  The Matersons are Eleanor and her husband, who for ten years played with Steve Earle's band.

Fantastic, they posted a definitely in your face video too with great cameos including her sister Bonnie.

This is the third time I've said in this playlist that I have no idea why I have one song in my library, this time from "Hope Floats" 2003 movie soundtrack.  At least I love and have a lot of Lyle, and he's a master coverer.  This is definitely from his big band croony period, and also a time when you grab a person and the room and slow dance.

Now I know when I added this digital album, when I was studying her and posted Edition no. 275.  When Taylor bought back all her old library, it was sad to think she wouldn't think about going back to this early album and maybe make it more Americana or Bluegrass rather than Country for a "Taylor's Version."

(here's praying for a miracle where she might take on a producer well known in that industry and just have fun with it... to hell with you if you don't think she is one of the most talented people in the first place; but I keep hoping for her to just sneak away from the pop dance stuff for an album or two?)

Ah the sweet smile that's in our post picture, and we did not paint it her like the song says in the first verse in this 2019 album.  I just her voice and yes when you see her live she loves to have a good rock band behind her.  I have seen her a few times solo FARM and when we saw her in Green Lake Thrasher Opera House.

Ok another mystery, but this time an iTunes single I bought back in 2012.  Great song but he must to too big to have a Bandcamp page (of course all you country fans are laughing at me now, when I went for the YouTube video only to find there were 30 million views, but I left my doltness comment stay).  You know this pop country is pretty cool when it's one song in 15.

9) Smile - Mike Ward

Leave it my buddy Michigander songwriter Mike Ward to have a dentist dad.  (Yes this is Mike's 22nd time in DBT)

"It’s no coincidence that my dad, the dentist, had a big toothy smile that he passed on to every member of our family. That smile represents the love he shared with all of us."

While in the YouTube playlist that ends this playlist will have Mike's studio version, I had to share this solo video too.

Met Ryan either at the Trempealeau Hotel or Ecker's Apple Orchard, but either way I walked home with a record.  So much fun to hear this 2018 show up in the library, start your own surprises by buying music.  It surprised me to hear this intensity I didn't remember that for the album.

I have this great video in the playlist at the end, but truly listen to the studio version too.

I got this song in 2015, and I have maybe 20 songs pre-2017 from this pop singer.  Just as I said I should get more of her in the library and searched for her website, I think I'm getting her "Music Radio" album for free.  Either way I think this is a great song; the studio version will be in the playlist at the end, the solo one was just too precious not to share.

Yes she can play the house concert if she comes to Wisconsin.

A LaCrosse local legend with a great Dylanesque quality to his voice and writing, plus he's a friend who I sometimes resemble if I put a hat on.

From a LaCrosse legend to a guy I met at a party just outside of LaCrosse.  Another unique voice, and really a heck of a nice guy.  Too funny the more I think of it, Kit Mayer was there too, plus I sang two songs at a swap.  Yep Joshua has that sound that you think he might be a friend of Woody Guthrie.

14) Bright Smile (Live) - Josh Ritter

Sure follow one Josh with another, Dave stop it; you are killing the audience.  Yep cool we saw Josh at the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest in 2024, and we were so far away.  I had two choices of this song live in the library and I choose the one that sounded more like this video.  (Boy envious of him being so close, so why doesn't he just play my house concert already?)

15) A Sunday Smile - Beirut

I know my son bought this in 2010, and I'm glad for it; plus the other four songs from the group.

This video was such an intense street concert that both will be the playlist at the end.  They are welcome to play the house concert, but they'll limit the amount of chairs with being what a six piece band?

I understand life needs to be simple, so here is a one click YouTube Playlist.
