DBT #250 Taylor Swift Pitchlist

Recently I laughed at a post that said their traffic has shot up with controversial posts; and I thought wow what if I said I thought Taylor Swift's music sucks.  First I'm not a jerk and second I owned just one single song "Safe and Sound" by her and it was with The Civil Wars and I loved it.

I did two things then to get to know her better, first I searched Bandcamp for people covering Taylor, and I narrowed it to these nine songs.  When I buy them and listen to them for a while, I'll post that as another playlist.

Then I've been stopping at the library to upload videos, and I thought I would check out some CD's of her, and they had a 2006 Taylor Swift (self titled) and 2009 Fearless Platinum Edition.  Any Swifties out there tell me where a lover of a acoustic music will find the best of Taylor's music.  Anything that might be like this Tiny Desk Concert.

I find both CD's amazing in the vocals, way more drum track than I would like, and that 2006 release even had some acoustic instruments on it.  Boy the songs are all about passionate love or break up songs, well written though; so where does she come up with all these hooks on pretty much the same themes?  I've heard the stories, real love affairs.  I will keep studying and listening to her music, though since she's not on Bandcamp (wow if she wanted control over her music that would be the place) I'm going to be choosey what I'll buy on Apple Music.  I might just start looking to see what kind of vinyl I could score.

Well I admire her movement to get Voter Registration and her newly formed passion for NFL and really she has great tastes in Travis Kelce.  Too funny I heard that she did say no to the NFL again to play the Super Bowl.  I wonder if they are still offering no money to do it; they say it's exposure Ha.. she's bigger than they are.  So where does that lead me?  I would love if Taylor Swift paid tribute to independent musicians and opened her Swifty army to new voices; kind of like how Nanci Griffith introduced me to her heroes in "Other Voices, Other Rooms"  Nanci did win a Grammy for the effort, and Taylor's effort would likely do the same. So here's my pitch list and reasons why.

1) A Face like Yours - Shanna in a Dress

If anyone was on this list, it has to be Shanna.  She loves Taylor's music and has put that in one of her songs that she would love to co-write with her.  The song that I would think Taylor's army needs to hear is a cover of a song that shows a love for a parent going through dementia.  I'm sure a large percentage of her following would relate.

Ha... I better have a YouTube playlist for this one, and it starts with this live recording.

2) Dancing in the Dark - Ruth Moody

I'm not sure if Taylor has ever done a cover of Bruce Springsteen, and while Ruth has written and released many awesome songs with the Wailin Jennys; this one would be perfect for her because she so loves to dance. (or so I see on the many posts out there)  Another great Bruce song she could consider is Fire.

Bought it on Apple so no embed of the song, but here Taylor good songs don't need a drum over taking the music.

3) Some People - Natalie Gelman

Natalie is a friend who does write very pop sounding songs and does have a great song about dementia too but I would love to have Taylor sing about people who have too much money.  Her pop credentials include opening for Bon Jovi.

I got a letter from you friend
Said it’s the beginning of the end
You’ve done all you think you can
And won’t do it again
A broken letter from you friend

Well you want more and more and more of things
Sometimes more is less it seems

Some people are so poor
Some people are so poor
Some people are so poor
All they have is money

She's pretty too just like Taylor.  (Oh come on Dave you could say that about all the women in this post)

4) Pink Moon for John Prine - Humbird

Humbird has a great library of songs and I was tempted to put in "When We're Together Again" to hear Taylor sing a cappella; but this song would be more of her country roots and there is a line in the song where Siri writes poetically about her friend and mine Luke running around a lot in the city looking for the moon.  I'd love to hear Taylor sing those words.  Humbird's Pete on drums should be how all drummers should blend.  I think so highly about Pete on drums and Pat on bass that we named our two twin tabbies "Pete & Pat"

I know Taylor would rock what Siri is wearing too.

5) Prince - Julie Williams

Now here's a tough love song with abuse.  Again forgive me that I don't know Taylor's library and if she has written one as powerful as this song.  I know there is a bunch of Swifties who could relate:

I’ve got bruises on my skin and a bite mark on my thigh from a prince who turned to pauper when the wicked clock struck midnight
I just wanted him to like me so that I could like myself
What does it say about me

6) You Are (Champagne on Wednesday) - Sarah Morris

Again Sarah has written a ton of songs that Taylor could sift through, this one had that pop feel that her fans could relate to.  Hey they all can't be way outside Taylor's wheelhouse right?

Hey Taylor, The Current (MPR) in the Twin Cities would let you do one of these videos too.

7) Full Cup - Kelly McRae

Ah a little touch of country "Ashes of a burning heart" boy that fits. (yes there is an audio video in the playlist)

8) I Like Trucks - Kendal Carson

Hey if Taylor has started to like NFL, maybe trucks too?  Ok I double dare you to cover this one, everyone including you would have a great laugh, and it's a fun song.

9) Shake - Samantha Farrell

This would be a classic follow up to Shake it Off.  Let's see Sam's had 633 views on her video, and Taylor had 3.3 Billion views on hers.  Yikes.  I might have been one because I had to learn the song for a guitar class once.  The craziest thing is to see an old fart like me sing and play that song.

10) On My Way - SHEL

I just love the way this one moves, and Eva's voice is likely easily in Taylor's range.

11)  A Matter of the Hearts - Sofia Talvik

Give me a break, look at the lyrics that start this song... they have Taylor Swift theme all over it.

Is it because I can’t have you
because I let you go
I was the wiser of us two
but I was a fool for you

Here's the song solo by my all time favorite Swede.

12) One Foot - Deidre McCalla

There are probably three songs on Deidre's Endless Grace album that could work, but with Taylor's push for voter registration, she needs a lightly political marching song.

One foot in front of the other
I am one step behind it all
Time never stops
The clock just keeps marching on
Marching on marching on
Marching on marching on

BONUS

Here's the song that Shanna in a Dress mentions Taylor.  I took the video at the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest where Shanna was on the main stage after winning their Songwriter contest.  Hey that's as big as a Grammy in my mind.
