DBT #311 Haunting of the Blog Vol 3
Welcome back to the suspense of murders, devils, and the ethereal songs and our annual Haunting of the Blog. Yes while I didn't want to repeat any song from the previous posts, this was pretty easy to find new music because I used only songs I added the digital library during the last month. (Incredible right?) Of course I love both 2022's Volume 1 and 2023's Volume 2 as well, so follow the links for some more classic favorites.
Ok while the music was all added recently, we're going to jump around the decades a bit. I was adding music from a found box of cd's, finishing an old vinyl stash, a new collection from a friend, and of course then there are some new purchases (old & new) plus gifts. That said, it's a great way to hear the new music though I'm not sure if I'll find it out in either Bandcamp or YouTube. Let's get started.
1) The Silkie - Lui Collins
I picked up her 1981 "Made in New England" vinyl recently at my last stop at Revival Records. This traditional song was covered of course by Joan Baez too, but Lui has such a beautiful voice. The song even has a Wikipedia page!
2) We Bury the Hatchet - Garth Brooks
When I say thanks to Marv, he was the one that recently just gave up on figuring what to do with his vinyl and cd collection and gave it to me. Such a nice guy, and yes of course I had a few doubles but it gave me some new fun discovering some mainstream music and some very obscure in my mind. I thought the metaphor of a hatchet handle sticking out of what? someone's head would apply?
3) Think Twice - Austin Skalecki
Austin is a recent find for me when the Trempealeau Hotel shared his Trempealeau song written in the hotel then I added it to my Trempealeau blog post. This tasteful blues has some pretty icy cold blood running through it.
4) Tell Laura I Love Her - Shanana
This record was sitting in a pile of records I had to decide, keep and file or toss. I really don't like to toss much but I can be ruthless on old Christmas records and stuff that really is beat up. This record clicks and pops a lot, but it's a keeper; and of course a dead woman song fits the playlist. I had to look twice to see if I hadn't shared this one on Vol 1 or 2 because Steve Goodman's live version is incredible too.
5) Alice Hotel - Pete & Lou Berryman
Anything can happen at a beat up hotel. Yes I got this 1980 classic at Revival Records.
6) Mary Shelley - Kray Van Kirk
Kray reached out to me for a house concert, and while the timing didn't work out; I bought his live album to get to know his music. How can you not have a haunting post without Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein. The song isn't too spooky but I love it; here's the first verse:
The year was 1818, Edgar Poe was only nine
H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, weren't born yet at that time
But a nineteen year old girl sat down, and wrote out her depiction
Of science gone so very wrong
Mary Shelley is the mom
Of modern science fiction
H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, weren't born yet at that time
But a nineteen year old girl sat down, and wrote out her depiction
Of science gone so very wrong
Mary Shelley is the mom
Of modern science fiction
7) So Long Harry Truman - Danny O' Keefe
I really wanted a song from this old vinyl I picked up for "Good Time Charlie's got the Blues" His death was nothing unusual, but Danny gave him a nod for living an honest life. Plus it's fun more upbeat song for the playlist.
8) Dainty Davie - Debby McClatchy
I picked up her 1979 "Lady Luck" album through a vinyl buy in Discogs. It feels haunting but it's probably just a harmless loving sex song. Ha. Yes I now own 4 of Debby's vinyls yet this is her first reference in the blog (note to self I need to fix that).
9) Black Flowers - Lynn Miles
I found her 2001 "Unravel" in a pile of CD's I was gifted and weren't put into Discogs or filed yet. Great haunting feel for this song. Since it was free, I did find her in Bandcamp so I'll buy something from her someday.
Boy I got lucky and my favorite YouTube channel had a live video of her doing the song.
10) Son of Obituary - George Gerdes
I really didn't know George at all until I bought an old panned vinyl "T-Shirt" of Loudon Wainwright III, and he covered "Hey Packy" by George. Love when Discogs have links to the song's author and I read about him then in Wikipedia that Joni Mitchell liked his songs. So I used Discogs to buy the 1972 "Son of Obiturary" record. It ain't all that bad when you body does die... ha.
11) Hot Sheet Motel - Sarah Peacock
With Sarah playing my house concert series I went to Apple Music and added some of her music to the library, here's another motel I'll avoid rather than wrestling with the devil.
12) Restless Soul - Lojo Russo
Speaking of the Bluff View House Concert series, Lojo just got done playing it and no her restless soul isn't still walking around the house.
13) Last Song - Jennifer Warnes
I was excited to pick up another Jennifer Warnes record for my collection. Yes I have six of her albums, and I have three more on the wish list. I wanted to have one song in the new playlist, so Last Song sounded sad enough with dark and silence in her room because I need MORE of Jennifer's voice in my life.
14) The Ballad of Kate Morgan - O Berkley, Where Hart Thou?
Another CD from my gift pile, and I had to look it up to see what the heck it was all about. Oh a celebration of Roots music! back in 2012. I don't think I can find any videos from their concert, but here's the song by Eve Selis who was in this Berkley group.
15) Dead Egyptian Blues - Hot Soup!
Ha, had to share this funny classic song from Michael Smith that I also got out of the CD gift pile. Here are the ladies singing it live.
16) O Death - O Berkley, Where Hart Thou? - Eve Selis
Well I couldn't find her version out there, so here is the song from the infamous movie with Ralph Stanley.
(of course it's ok to share because I own that too) Plus I found her in Bandcamp, and I might just feast on her music along the way.
Ok, ok, ok... Volumes one and two might be scarier, but I love this way to get me to listen to new and old music that is new to my digital library and I hope you enjoyed meeting some new artists and songs.
Here's the one-click playlist in YouTube... ha if you dare.
