DBT #331 Dylan Covers - A Complete Unknown Edition
Needless to say I have completely enjoyed the movie to a point where I recenly finished my Dylan library now up to the "Before The Flood", yes 14 of the 37 albums I own by Bob. I would have posted something earlier but I have been stretching my exploits in Discogs by adding releases into their vast (some call it the largest database) library. I started with friends and here's the links to what I added, Dan Berger, Luke Callen, Leela & Ellie Grace, and Samantha Farrell plus two compilations (more work) The Gibson Sessions and Music from the Heartland. Yes nerdy, and one might say you are free Discogs help, but I do think it's my contribution to the world of music.
Ok back to the playlist, I have published two editions of Dylan Covers #207 and #210 and yes I have built up my digital Dylan cover playlist up to 146 songs; and I'm not done yet. You know I will buying more vinyl or cd's if they have a Dylan cover. So how to create this playlist I found this Deadline article that listed all the songs performed during the movie, and got started finding 13 without repeating songs. Here we go with an absolutely eclectic (not electric) playlist. I hope I get you to say wow unique cover, really they covered the song, or maybe I need to buy that too.
1) Farewell Angelina - Saskia
I believe Saskia has shown up in the past with her wonderful cover album, she will show up again.
2) Love is Just a Four Letter Word - Joan Baez
Now this officially was not in Deadline's article but in another Dylan documentary "Don't Look Back" that I watched only because of the movie has the real Joan sitting on a bed saying if you ever finish it, I want to record it. He never released a version until a bootleg release. So don't kill me, I'm sure it hit the "Complete Unknown's" cutting floor. Of course adding the song gives you this awesome fan video to relive the time period. (BTW Joan turned 84 a few days back... pretty cool eh)
3) One Too Many Mornings - Jerry Jeff Walker
Here's another legend covering a legend, he countrified it a little, cool harmonica.
4) It's All Over Now, Baby Blue - Judy Collins
From her Dylan cover album, yes I could have put a few more in the playlist.
5) Highway 61 Revisited - Johnny Winter
I told you my music is eclectic and can be electric. Awesome we get a live video, albeit when Johnny needed a chair to make it through the concert. He still has it though.
6) The Times They Are A-Changin' - The Finest Kind
Here's ying/yang trip from the last song, the three part harmonies on this cover are incredible. Sorry this will not be on the YouTube playlist at the end.
7) Girl Of The North Country - John Gorka
I'm not sure why Red House records hasn't done Volume 3 of Nod to Bob. John later put out this wonderful video which I choose over the studio video. Fitting it is just a voice and guitar.
8) All Over You - Rick Derringer and the McCoys
I actually just found this on this 1974 release of two McCoys albums on a double album. Thank you to Discogs for their search abilities on my library.
9) Don't Think Twice - Lissa Schneckenburger
What a great cover album Lissa put out, and here's another unique folkie fiddler's look at a Dylan song.
10) Blowing In The Wind - Saskia
Can this song can be set differently? Well take a listen to Saskia leave it to the British.
Lucky me, I get an official video, but weirdly her settings don't allow me to embed it. So click the picture it will take you there, and it's in the YouTube playlist at the end. I need more of her in my library.
11) It Ain't Me Babe - Lucy Kaplansky
I love Lucy's voice, and I think I've seen her only once.
12) Only a Pawn in Their Game - Rich Robinson
I'm not sure what truly inspired me to buy this 2009 soundtrack from "The People Speak" but it's a cool cover.
13) A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall - Laura Marling
I thought I would stop at 12 songs, but I found I bought this song back in 2017 in Apple music because it was used in one of the Peaky Blinder shows. (Boy I miss that show.)
Yes... I hope this transported you back, and also woke up your Bob's senses that he was really the elite songwriter of our time, and of course the 60's where this music was all based. Here's a link for the one click YouTube Playlist (less the Finest Kind song).
