DBT #352 Bandcamp Friday March 2025

This playlist is an excuse for me to sit and listen some of the four hours of music I bought today during the Bandcamp Friday, where BC waives their fees to the artists as a give back thank you for choosing their platform to share and sell their music.  Keep in mind many artist use release companies to push their new music out to all the streaming platforms, but those companies don't work with Bandcamp; so BC is more a DYI platform where the artist really gets 80-85% of the money from your purchases.  It goes up to about 97% on the BC Fridays.  So much better than that Spotify that sucks the life out of independent musicians.

Ok I'll get off my soapbox, and share some music.

1) Penny Evans - Willi Carlisle

I'm getting his 10" vinyl of this live EP; and if you have ever seen Willi live, you'll want this memory.  For some reason I could embed High Tone Dance, so here's Willi's cover of song Steve Goodman made famous.

Of course I got a video of him doing the song at the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest

2) After Midnight (Nothing Good Happens) - Twisted Pine

Ok before I got started browsing my BC wishlist, I did go through my emails to find that Signature Sounds was celebrating both the BC Friday and their 30th Anniversary with a 30% deal.  Well it was exactly what I could use to buy familiar and new music.   So I scooped up vinyl and digital from Willi, Eilen Jewel, and a new band to me Twisted Pine.  Oh my they are everything I love in a band, and have a great random groove & harmonies like my other favorite Buffalo Rose. Plus a flute! I really thought this After Midnight was going to be a cover, but it's an outstanding fun song about having a hard time to go to bed at a festival.   You need to watch the video, I'm thinking you'll fall in love with them too.

3) Sad Winter Song - Nikki Morgan

Nikki has graced the blog a lot since I met her at FARM, and I this song is a tight Americana blues that will show up again when I do my Whiskey Vol 4.  Nikki describes the inspiration as: (boy I need to hug her next time I see her)

So, this song came from a cold winter night... thinking about a lover I had found at the time.
I was newer to the neighborhood and he had become my first friend; but the relationship had gotten quite monotonous and I was cold... & lonely... & wanted to be in the arms of someone who really cared.
I grew up in North Carolina but the 2nd Act of my life was spent in Chicago. I remember the cold nights and the long winters (...I had a couple of messed up relationships there too, and none of them could ever seem to do me quite right.) Sad Winter Song is an homage to the moments of heartbreak that got me through the (long) Chicago winters and the liberations I eventually learned to find.
-Nikki

4) Beer in a Teacup - Grace Morrison

I picked up this single because I'm sure it will show up in a Beer playlist someday; and it rocks and it's about her Grandma she must have rocked too.  Of course I'm sharing it now because you should here it.

I love this live video.

5) The Devil's Paintbrush Road -The Wailin' Jennys

I had a few choice cuts from Firecracker bought in iTunes a long time ago; and decided to add a couple more.

It's always a good day to watch the Jennys.

6) A Man I Hardly Know - Eilen Jewell

Like I said earlier, vinyl, 30% discount, and Eilen singing Loretta Lynn... the decision was easy.  The album is so crisp, with a nod to old country, and Eilen nails Loretta's inflections.

7) Rum Boogie - Southern Avenue

I'm not a huge fan of Pre-ordering albums, and I'm not sure where I found the inspiration to put this group in my wishlist (I think I subscribe to Alligator Records ha no discount here); but when I played the two teaser cuts; I was ALL IN for this band from Memphis.  Groovy percussion, harmonies, and a slide guitar with a nod to my Southern rock days.

8) Leaving Louisiana Blues - Shinyribs

Vinyl preorder of Shinyribs who we loved at Moccasin Creek Fest last year.  Hey at least the music might show up when I need new music?  Until then I get this classy slow blues dance.

9) Don't Wanna Lose - Taylor James Donskey

Funny tonight we'll see Taylor's doppelganger Luke Callen.  Taylor had been putting out singles, but when I saw a whole album I jumped at it.  I haven't absorbed it all yet, but I loved this song after the first listen.

10) Show Me (Feat. the McCrary Sisters) - Mati Haskell

I think I got one song downloaded from this album from Mati's MySpace page.  Yeah, I loved that feature in that site and miss that. Facebook should add a feature like that for musicians today.  I ran into it recently and decided to check, and yes the 2010 album was out there.  Loved how she added a vinyl noise at the beginning of this bluesy song.  The album is very diverse, and definitely adds more eclectic feel to the library.

11) Joy Has Not Forgotten Me - Ordinary Elephant

I've seen and written about this great duo in SERFA, but we also saw them at the Mile of Music.  They were hanging out in my wishlist in BC, and I finally decided it was time.  They are so good, like Viv & Riley, Stone & Snow, Weary Ramblers, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Admiral Radio, and oh my I could keep going on.  There are so many tracks I love on this album, the only thing I was disappointed in was that it wasn't available on vinyl to live forever.

These two would look great in my living room doing a house concert.

12) Seed I've Sown - The Burney Sisters

The Burney Sisters are reinventing them as just Bella and Emma, of course it took their mom April telling me to look for a second bandcamp page.  Here's how they describe the song:

Here is a heartfelt ballad that captures the emotional tug-of-war of being on the road as a touring musician. The song explores the loneliness and longing that comes with the ache of missing loved ones, familiar faces, and the simple comforts of everyday life. The song blends nostalgia with hope, illustrating both the pain of absence and the quiet determination to keep going (to bloom), knowing that the journey is part of a greater purpose. With its gentle melody and emotionally charged vocals, "Seed I've Sown" resonates deeply with anyone who's ever been torn between their ambitions and their roots.

You know these beautiful ladies would have a video too.

13) Vintage Ford - Lost Mary

Posting about my BC purchase in Reddit got me a recommendation to check out Lost Mary.  They are wonderful so I started following them and bought this song.  The lead vocals with that high tenor remind of Brett Dennan.  Let's put it this way, way out of my vocal range.

14) Good Morning (In Heaven) - Kathleen Parks

Right... super impressed with the fiddler from Twisted Pine that I looked her up to find she had solo music.  Feasted on this song to remind me.

Call me Lucky Dog (... ha which is my last band's name..), but there is also a video that I want to be transported to.

15) Start/Stop - Twisted Pine

Remember I said Twisted Pine reminded me of my other favorite band Buffalo Rose?  I'm going to have to look at my device to see who's playing when this song comes on, though if I wait long enough the flute gives it away.

BONUS... during the day I messaged Adrian & Meredith that their page for a recent EP wasn't setup to buy; so before I went to bed I double checked and two hours before BC Friday was over I bought it.

16) Glasses Wallet Keys and Phone - Adrian and Meredith

Love these two as a the duo I saw at SERFA, but this song and arrangement is so cool too.  Love the story they shared too, and now I have music of theirs in the library I'm sure they will show up again.

The songwriting session started off like any other, but as the hours ticked by, fatigue and delirium set in. In their punch-drunk state, the band members found themselves riffing on the classic children's song "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes," replacing the body parts with everyday items people obsessively check for before leaving the house. Thus, "Glasses Wallet Keys and Phone" was born, a tongue-in-cheek polka that pokes fun at the struggle to muster the motivation to venture out post-pandemic.

With spirits high despite their exhaustion, the band decided to make an event of laying down the track. They fired up the grill, cracked open some cold beverages, and transformed the studio into an impromptu barbecue party atmosphere. Fueled by good food and good cheer, they captured the satirical anthem in one take, their shared delirium translating into an infectiously zany performance.

Call me Lucky again, because you and I are going to be treated to why I have loved these two after I found out the woman who came to the stage to clog was Meredith.  We almost drove 3 hours and rented a hotel to see them in Green Lake, but they were only the opening act.  Too much devotion for 10-15 minutes; next time I get a chance though because Adrian is originally from WI.  Yep he could easily be the lead singer in the Happy Schnapps Band but he leans klezmer.  Right from the song... ain't that Wisconsin?

My liver and my ego seem to have re-united Who turned off all the lights Some canucks gave me a crown No way in hell, im backing down, gonna Show my true colors, a wisconsinite!

While I would prefer you listen and buy their music in Bandcamp, I know the world still revolves around simple one click playlists, so here is all 16 songs in a ONE Click Playlist.
