DBT #349 2024 Rocky Mountain Folks Fest Recap
Oh my, I was surprised I never posted a recap of our back to back journey to Lyons CO and the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival put on by Planet Bluegrass. I had put 36 videos from the weekend together in a nice playlist; but come on do I really expect you to watch 2 1/2 hours plus of music? I better get you (and of course me) a recap of the great weekend. (Right this is the playlist you are going to get, not a special one at the end with only the 12 songs.)
We so loved our first experience that we wanted to go back as more veterans knowing what we're doing with packing short chairs and creek stomping shoes; and yes both worked out fine.
It's a magical place to let your hair down or whatever this is.
We got a cabin 5 minutes away.
I repped Shanna in a Dress T-shirt, she was the '22 Songwriter Contest winner.
Yes we stomped in the creek.
And if you listen to the Snippets Video, you'll hear Lori say during the Cindy Kalmenson clip; I've got to go get some pants too! She did, and gets rave reviews every time she wears them.
So how about a dozen videos (a third) to give you some of my favorite memories. (Not a count down just twelve videos for you to love)
Of course Shanna bringing out a seagull for her song Like a Beach was such a great memory.
We first came to the festival because Shanna won the 2022 songwriter contest, and in the Wildflower Pavilion (our favorite stage) they always have a song swap with the finalists. Martin Gilmore was 2024's winner and he was really good.
Who couldn't fall in love with a soft spoken cowgirl from Oregon, Racyne Parker who was based in either Denver or Seattle at the time of the fest. Since the fest I've scored her rookie vinyl release, and you know there's a very good chance it'll show up in a release review along the line. (Ha quick update, it was the next edition, have a listen here.)
Staying in the Wildflower Pavilion, I've been following Gabrielle Louise since my MySpace days, and fest the year before I ran into her as an audience member. This year she was a finalist, and too my surprise later I found out she was probably 3-4 months pregnant at the time. I did take like three videos of her; she's such a warm person and a great songwriter.
I recognized Karyn Ann, also a finalist, from meeting her through the Great River Folk Fest songwriting contest. Right... what a stacked contest and if I'm only sharing 12 videos I can't post them all so remember here's the playlist link for your browsing.
We loved the winner from 2023 Cindy Kalmenson, and here's a great song from her main stage set if you growing a little older like me and many others.
It was fun to see Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris again after we saw them at the Moccasin Creek Festival in June. Yes is the song that I recorded Grant Peeples covering at the MCF.
The fest brought us acts we dearly love and have seen before. We saw Michaela Anne at an intimate house concert in LaCrosse, and here she is on the main stage also a little pregnant at the time. (yikes something in the water?)
The fest was our third time to see Pokey LaFarge, boy if you get a chance to see him; do it.
Last time we saw Peter Mulvey he was unmic'd and in our favorite local venue and eatery, The Trempealeau Hotel. This is one of my wife's favorite songs of his.
Ok... we have two left so they must be two new surprises. Rebecca Folsom put a great set including a fantastic cover of a James Taylor song "That Lonesome Road". Here's an original, and yes I'd love to see her again.
Ok by choosing Bandits on the Run, I'm leaving off favorites Willi Carlisle, Katie Boeck, Vance Gilbert, The Faux Paws, and Margo Cilker; but this song will leave you smiling; and you can find the videos I took in this playlist.
Ok we two bonus videos just to bring you general positive vibes that the festival brings. A snippet video with a lot of people watching. (Oops I forgot the S in Folks Fest) plus you get to see three more artists Sir Woman, The Mother Hips, and The Watson Twins.
Lastly, you might not venture back to my 2023 Recap Edition no. 276, so here's a 4 minute recap to John Denver's "Welcome to my morning"
