DBT #428 Covers (Educate Dave)
What started with a free download of "Heroes" from Beth Bombara as she posted:
YOU can make a difference. Even the seemingly small things can help. So, do what you can, turn up the volume, and channel your inner hero.
I recorded this in 2020 for a commission project, and never released it publicly. Until today. I dug deep on this one, bringing my voice somewhere it's never been before. Raw. Emotional.
Download/Listen for free directly on my website the next few days. Will be available on select streaming platforms one week from today.

So while I thinking about a Heroes playlist I found out quickly it was a David Bowie... thus Educate Dave on who are covering; so you might roll your eyes that I didn't know these songs; this list all surprised me.
So let's get started:
1) Heroes - Beth Bombara - David Bowie cover
Ok so I'm in conversation with Beth how to share this song with people, and she said it will be on YouTube in a week so until then I would ask you to get it as FREE download here, or hear it at this link.
2) Short Skirt / Long Jacket - Buffalo Rose - Cake cover
Yep I have over a dozen songs by Cake including this 2001 song because my son and I shared an iTunes account while he was in undergrad. It was a hope that he would build his library with songs purchased and not shared so I would pay for it. I think he was good at it for awhile, because I have some diverse iTunes purchases from 2000-10's era. Buffalo Rose's recent EP release was all covers and I recognize one out of six, so they helped a guy out and told me on the info in each BC release.
Now let me say, I should really post a review of their "All You Can Eat" album not just because I absolutely love this band; but it's because it demonstrates what songwriters would like to SCREAM at you. It doesn't cost so much to pay for licensing, and bang you have a winner song with YOUR sound and your fans will love it. I'm being kind here, but TOO many musicians don't have a dozen finally crafted songs to fill an album; you're being cheap and short cutting your fans not paying for a little royalty to someone who wrote a kick ass song you love. Ok back to how beautiful Margot is in this video and that I would have love to been watching this from the other side of the street, and of course... pink pants instead of a short skirt? Was it too cold? I'll see if ask them when I see them in Appleton in March.
3) Boy From the Country - Callaghan - John Denver cover of Michael Martin Murphy
This was a live cut from a Zoom show done during the pandemic with her Dad who recently passed away and inspired the album. So precious she put it on her recently album that you can currently get for free on her website. Ok I until she posted the song, I did not realize it was a song from my Geronimo's Cadillac that I own and a Live album from John that I don't own.
4) This Masquerade - George Benson - Leon Russell cover
Recently I pulled the Breezin album out to find that his hit was a Leon Russell cover from an album "Carney" I bought within the last 15 months. Somehow I haven't imported it yet and I'm looking forward to hearing the original.
5) The Next Big Nothing - Sunny Sweeney - Audrey Auld cover
Ok you all might be going, who? But I met Audrey through MySpace, and her Australian / Nashville country was pretty special; and then just like that she died in 2015. To see she was covered on Sunny's rookie debut album was pretty special to me, and it's a fun song to have on a rookie release. Right I did a deep dive into Audrey's releases in Discogs and I don't believe she ever released it.
6) I Felt the Chill - Elvis Costello - Loretta Lynn cover
Elvis's "Secret, Profane & Sugarcane" had been on my wishlist for a while and I found it in Washburn on our trip to see Bonnie Raitt at the Big Top. I've been told Loretta is a great songwriter, and I do need to study her. Just like with Dolly, she's more than "Jolene", and Loretta is more than "Coal Miner's Daughter." Yes this is one cool Elvis Americana album; so glad I found it for only $4.
7) Where'd All The Time Go? - Allison Young - Dr. Dog cover
Allison is my enigma in my library; is she a big band jazz singer, is she a gentle nylon string folkie, or a front for a jazz quartet; or is she my favorite a part of a duo. Well she's also one of the cutest curly red hair YouTube content creator. If you don't believe me, check out her video on the song "Edelweiss". Yes I'm just a small part of her 164,000 followers. The little Bandcamp EP "Matters of the Heart" is all covers but the others are more jazz songs that didn't surprise me that I didn't know them. This one was a hoot of a journey.
8) Mother Nature's Son - John Denver - Beatles cover
Ok I just recently shared this but it still wows me, so I shared the studio version of the song in Beatles Covers V2. I love that he's in London and starts off with a Beatles song but didn't create them.
9) Prison Trilogy (Billy Rose) - Harpeth Rising - Joan Baez cover
I so miss Harpeth Rising putting out new music; when I rediscovered the album recently I was surprised this was a Joan Baez song from a record "Come from the Shadows" that Lori (my wife) contributed to the library. Here's the studio version:
They owned the cover, and by looking at my comments on the video I did know 7 years ago that I knew it was a cover. Ha.
10) Lonesome On'ry and Mean - Rattlesnake Annie - Steve Young cover
Yes the 1987 self titled album I bought because the cover looked cool and Willie Nelson was quoted on the back. This Steve Young (yes the guy who wrote Seven Bridges Road) song was the last song on the record and of course surprise, I found I owned his original too that I imported just yesterday. While I was importing my wife came down and we played a game of darts. She said, how did I not know you had this record. Geez even I don't know all the time. Not amazingly but Annie's version of the song is not in YouTube so I'll pause and fix that so she'll join some legends who also covered the song, Waylon Jennings and The Traveling McCourys. ------- Ok fixed.
11) Nobody Knows - Lissa Schneckberger - Nelly cover
Hey so I'm pretty sure you know I'm clueless on anything Nelly might have released, so when Lissa put out her 2013 Covers album it was so new and innovative. The whole album is great, but this song is my go to all the time, so when I thought about this playlist it was a must that it was included.
12) Crazy Train - Sarah Peacock - Ozzie Osbourne cover
I'm so out of it, I never heard of this song and I now I find it everywhere. Even played by our marching bands for sports events. Sorry just never an Black Sabbath or Ozzie fan. Sarah will be in here twice with the song because it is again another one I thought of originally when this playlist was starting. First her recording was bought in Apple music, so I can't embed the studio without using YouTube, but you have to hear her kick ass with it live and solo too. It inspired a musician friend of mine to learn it to cover it as well. The studio uses some strings along with her incredible guitar skills, let alone you can understand her singing and the words too, right?
Here's one solo live a week before she played our Bluff View House Concerts.
Ok and then I got Todd Saner's cover of Sarah's cover too, of course at the Trempealeau Hotel one of my most favorite VENUE.
Ok so here's your one click YouTube playlist that will include Beth's David Bowie cover when it's released. It just doesn't make sense for me to add it if she's going to.
