DBT #443 Dance Vol 2

It's been a long long while since I posted Dance or volume one, way back in Edition #89. It was then inspired by Sarah Morris's video cover of John Prine's "I Just Want to Dance With You".  It was a family & friend project and it was too good not to share.  Go ahead revisit the post, it's the first song.

In that 2022 post, I mention that I picked the ten songs from 21 songs in a Dance playlist I just put together; well now it stands at 121 songs without an exhaustive Discogs search so it's time for a Dave's Dozen or two of some of the gems.

Here are the covers!

Here's my Dave's Dozen songs:

1) Just Wanna Dance - Randy Crowell

One might say that this recent import from a 1981 "Self Titled" record I just picked up.  Yes it was his third release and it's a wonderful album.

2) The Poor Boy Can't Dance - Barton Carroll

Why I added this song from iTunes back in 2015 is beyond me, but now that I rediscovered it; I want more Barton in my library and found the 2010 album in Bandcamp, maybe next BC Friday.  The story painted in the song is pure poetry even to read it:

Well I don't know what to say to the prettiest bridesmaid And It's easy for some, but you got me stunned and dumb And you know how it is when a man gets down He won't know love from a hole in the ground But I'm sick of the wait, and I'm sick of the fear And it ends right here Things were bad for me; I came across the sea Never knowing just what I'd do I got you old man doused at the the public house And he took me on his crew So I worked my way; showed up every day And I was like an only son Oh, I was a lonely one And you know I do, whenever I see you I always try to avert my eyes But you caught my gaze as the glasses raise And we toast the groom and bride And though you're in the sight of every man tonight I keep telling it to myself "If the whisky's strong, and the band plays on, I can do no wrong." So dance with me, won't you dance with me Little Katie don't you turn me down I been in a rut, but I could get the guts

3) Dance, Dance, Dance - Steve Miller cover by Willie Jaeger - Carol Van Alstine

I bought this album back when they played the Great River Folk Fest in 1991.  I should have expected that I needed to add this to YouTube to listen along because their cover of "Ring Them Bells" which I uploaded for a Monday Morning Song edition on the Dylan song; but then never used their song.  Yes my Adobe photos dancers show up in this upload but I had to speed them up to match the music.

4) Would You Like to Dance - Deidre McCalla

"With a Little Luck" I met this woman at FARM back in 2022; and now have started to collect her back catalog and this song is a perfect example of the 1987 record.

5) Dancing In The Dark - Michelle Lewis

Bruce has been on my mind, so Michelle's cover was a must for the playlist.  I met Michelle through the on-line Great River Folk Fest Songwriter contest, and sadly this 2018 album is the last she has posted to Bandcamp.  People that's why I do playlists to bring back voices to the front of my life again.

Boy I sure wish there was a video; and while the playlist at the end will have an audio I miss seeing Michelle too.  She's such a talented beautiful lady.

6) Dance For The Elephants Lives - Stuart Stotts

I met Stuart through the GRFF contest too, and after I retired from running it; he won!  The song is the title track from a pretty fun album.  While there is a YouTube audio video of the song out there, it has a kid's setting so it can't be included in the playlist at the end.

7) Better Dancer - Blair Borax

Hmm... very nice song from Blair's most recent album "The Color Green"  Yes don't trust my Bandcamp collection; I bought the album through her Kickstarter.

Plus I found a new YouTube channel with live videos:

8) Dance Around - Woody Guthrie

I highly recommend "Woody's 20 Grow Big Songs" as a required piece of music to raise your children.  Plus I still love it.

9) Dance the Blues Away - Bill Miller

From a local legend's second album "Old Dreams and New Hopes" and it truly is his best out the five albums I own of his.  Yes the record is for sale in Discogs starting at $63, and it does make me tempted to sell my copy since I have imported it.  I will put Bill's song into YouTube, but since he co-wrote it with Gary Dunn; his version will be my placeholder until I do:

10) Dance With Me - Prairie Smoke

Another local legendary band; and what makes them legendary?  Well the length of time they have played together, 1997! Here's a great video from Erin their dulcimer player with pictures throughout the years.

"Dance With Me" is a great original song penned by their guitarist Tom Walter.  Written for his lovely wife, Jenny and of course I need to add it to YouTube for you to hear and a good reason to use my dancers again but this time I had to slow them down:

11) Dance Me To The End Of Love - The Civil Wars

I never appreciated this Leonard Cohen song enough until I hear John Paul and Joy sing it.  The video is grainy, which in a way is perfect.

12) Thanks For The Dance - Leonard Cohen

Ah sometimes I just have to pick a song from my wake playlist, "When I Leave"  Right I love there are two Leonard songs to end this playlist.

With the exception of "Dance for the Elephant's Lives", here is your ONE Click YouTube Playlist.
