DBT #444 All the Ladies Now V2 (Moonflowers)
After I had a chance to see a new local band called the Moonflowers at the Trempealeau Hotel, I started singing a Emily Scott Robinson song on the way to the car. I knew then I would be revisiting this theme, the first time since Edition no. 328, which is now considered Volume One.
Here are the four of the videos I took of Moonflowers who I went to see because Abbey Lane the guitarist in the group is a woman who also taught guitar at Boys & Girls Club with me. I never had a chance to see her out gigging. She was with Sophia Landis on keys who has made the blog in the Driftless Women in Music Edition no. 140, and Leah Strong who added the third vocal and percussion. Such eclectic fun and sweet harmonies. They play once a month and follow Abbey to find out when and where. They are at the point where the songs are all covers, but such a great eclectic mix you never tire and you sometimes wonder who did that song?
And if you don't go back to the Driftless Women post, here is the video I got of Sophia's original that night:
Now that I'm back in the groove, my next step was to identify a whole bunch of possibilities and after 36 songs for a big playlist I curated this dozen songs that I would love Moonflowers to cover.
They are from these albums or singles, and here we go....
1) Double Double - Emily Scott Robinson
All of Built on Bones is her MacBeth witches play is for three women, and Double Double is one that likely could fit into a Moonflowers set, though Old Gods is still my favorite. Here's a challenge for the ladies... if they learned that EP and could do a Tribute show; I would have to book them for a house concert.
A live version with two voices, but it's a nice contrast to the studio version.
2) I Want To Be A Real Cowboy Girl - The Sweetback Sisters
Yep I recently picked up this back catalog release. I kind of picked this song because it includes wearing a belt four inches wide; and that's what the Moonflowers did!
Another comparison studio to live... love it.
3) The Obvious Child - I'm With Her
Dang, just got the whole album "Sing Me Alive" downloaded today, and on May 7th I might be buying tickets to see them in Door County in August. Since it's a live album, this is how it sounds either way and it's more fun to see they made it on Colbert before he's taken off because of Trump.
4) Short Skirt / Long Jacket - Buffalo Rose
Still riding the high of seeing them in Appleton in the last few weeks; this cover would be awesome for Moonflowers.
5) Long Gone Don Juan - The Rebel Eves
Yes this was also on Edition no. 382 "Licensed to Feel", but Moonflowers need a murder ballad.
I love the stripped down version as much as the studio; Moonflowers needs to get Leah a suitcase bass drum.. ha.
6) Dry Town - Della Mae
My Lucky Dog band wanted to cover this song by Gillian Welch, but Della Mae did!
7) Wade in the Water - Patty Griffin
From her Grammy winning album.
8) Can't Buy Me Love - Hot Soup
When in doubt cover another Beatles song like this:
9) Safety First - Rude Girls
This PSA is on the 1990 "Mixed Messages" album.
10) After The Gold Rush - Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, & Emmylou Harris
Prelude's incredible cover of Neil Young's song starts off my 1974 50th Anniversary post on Edition #308, and it was inspiration for the Trio's cover here:
11) Both Side Now - Lucy Wainwright Roche & Suzzy Roche
Mom & daughter do an incredible job on Joni's classic.
12) Old Man - The Wailin' Jennys
This cover is near and dear to me because our Rose River Band covered the song based on this arrangement. Here's the studio:
And a live version:
