DBT #321 25th Anniversary of 1999
In 1999 my son was 9 and of course I was working at WinCraft. While it saw the Bronco win back to back Super Bowls, I didn't get a copy of my on TV that year. Here was the year before, just to say I've aged a bit in 25 years. No I wasn't dying my hair.
Lately I have been so enjoying my 50 year anniversary playlist of 1974, I thought I would be prepared on time to do 1975 in January. Wow, a second incredible playlist so much so I'm making two 50 song playlists of 1975. I got to thinking that many celebrate 25 years as pretty special, and what can I find in music from 2000, and then why not still hit 1999 while I'm still in 2024. So now you know how I got to making this fun playlist. And no, sadly I don't remember having to import any vinyl to do this list; it either comes from CD's or digital downloads purchased. (hell if they were borrowed or shared it's hard to tell from that long ago but they are in the library no Spotify here)
Yes, I did have to do some curation to stick to just 25; but these are 25 songs that I have long loved, artists that have meant a lot to me, or music I recently bought from that year. Let's get started:
1) Pride and Joy - Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughn
Recorded in 1983 and released in 1999, this won't be the only new music in 1999 released posthumously; and I'm glad for it.
2) Steal My Kisses - Ben Harpers & the Innocent Criminals
Not sure how or why I found this great song, but we ended up getting it as one of our favorites in the Rose River cover band that I was part of. Right the videos won't always be only from 1999
3) 1952 Vincent Black Lightning - Beth Wood
One of the songs that convinced me to book Beth for a Bluff View House Concert series which started in 2008.
4) Surprised by Joy - Carolyn Arends
So I started the year at 40 years old, and about that time I started playing guitar IN FRONT of people. Well at church at least. It took a couple more years to play in bars. My sister introduced me to Carolyn's music after I started playing in ACTS (Accentuating Christ Through Song - a name coined by fellow founding member Tim Kolek which he borrowed from a previous church) Carolyn has stayed until today as my all time favorite Christian music songwriter. Surprised? I'm not she is a great story teller in song, and you know I'm a sucker for a good story.
5) After the Gold Rush - Dolly, Linda & Emmylou - Trio II
Their sequel CD had this classic Neil Young cover that I think they borrowed the arrangement from Prelude who was in my 50th anniversary of 1974. Fitting 25 years later, and yes a real actual video from 1999; damn these are incredibly beautiful and talented women.
6) Fond Affection - Finest Kind
A folk trio that I think I own everything they have released. Ian Robb recently put this up on Bandcamp, and it's a good thing because I can't find it on YouTube. There are versions of "Go and Leave if Wish to" but they are all too incredibly fast to enjoy them so the YouTube playlist will be short this song.
7) The Ferryman - Gaelic Storm
My favorite Irish drinking band release "Herding Cats" in 1999; too many great tracks on the CD; here's one:
8) Dog's Life - John McCutcheon
While Discogs would show I have Eleven CD's or Records of John, this one was a single download. Yes this should inspire a lot of fan videos, but I only found one good one.
9) Let's Invite Them Over - John Prine & Iris Dement
If Iris was worried about what her mom would think of In spite of Ourselves, did she keep this one from her? Of course that whole cd is an incredible mix of fun.
10) Sisters of Mercy - Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris
Same year as Trio II, I'll take them singing together anytime; here's a Leonard Cohen cover.
11) Waterlife - ELCA Worship & Praise Twin Cities band.
The ELCA had put out an absolutely wonderful companion CD to this alternative worship hymn book; sadly I can not find it anywhere. Our ACTS band, at Holmen Lutheran, covers it for every confirmation service. I had it spliced out of a recent worship, but the audio is kind of distorted. It's truly a wonderful hymn with a totally weird percussion timing line, but we have the best drummer in the business. Maybe I'll try again in the future, Ivan has been improving the mix for both in house and YouTube services.
12) Cooksferry Queen - Richard Thompson
Dang this is such a good, and really when I started to pay attention to Richard. I think the video is also from vintage 1999 since the announcer was talking about the Mock Tudor release, and the green lawn mower is displayed behind the band.
13) Mood Ring - Paul Thorn
Paul tells us about Jessie Scott of Music Fog before playing this dated classic song. Don't know Music Fog? My favorite YouTube channel and they even have an active label in the blog. Now would kids even know what a mood ring is today?
14) Holy Now - Peter Mayer
My ACTS and Rose River bandmate Tim Kolek recommended this song for special music in church. While we never did it, I became a huge fan of Peter Mayer from Minnesota. (yes there is more than one). Of course, we're a Lutheran church and this definitely rings home to my being raised Roman Catholic.
15) Get Behind the Mule - Tom Waits
I first was attracted to this song by Hope Waits (no relation) cover; so I had to pick up Tom's too, surprise it was released in 1999.
16) Whiskey & Sangria - Eileen Ivers
I inherited this CD from somewhere, and it's the only instrumental in the mix. Ok, but I was so lucky to also get a video of her live. Much more fun to listen to when you can watch them. LOVE the title.
17) Blue Mountains of Mexico - Ian Tyson
I first fell in a love with a cover of this song by Jennifer Warnes on a tribute album, and needed to add this to the library. Yes I ended up finding the CD in some used bin or in Discogs; I forget where.
18) Carey Brown - Steve Earle
Such a fantastic album, so many great songs and I picked Carey Brown. Since we laughed at the younger Dave Schipper to start this blog, I had to share this 1998 video of the song because I did a double take if that was him in the video.
19) The Woodbridge Dog Disaster - Stan Rogers
A collection of live and studio recording were released posthumously, second in this playlist. Boy I love this cover that Stan did live. And yes it can crack you up every time, and the video has fun finding appropriate pictures.
20 Dressed in White - Malcolm Holcombe
Bought this album in Bandcamp during 2022 for a Dresses blog post.
21) Gust of Wind - Ray Bonneville
Saw and bought this cd after Ray played the Great River Folk Fest, and now I love this video because I said to myself, "hey that's Carrie Elkin snapping her fingers" Yes she played the Bluff View in 2013.
22) Smooth - Carlos Santana w/Rob Thomas
I wasn't much on buying pop music but this one got my attention. I love how smooth this 52 year old guy was in this video from that year.
23) Fools Fall In Love - Katy Moffatt
Another inherited CD that I need to listen to more.
24) I Will Remember You - Sarah McLachlan
Another inherited CD and my only one by Sarah. When looking up the cd in Wikipedia, I found this song won her a grammy; so thus it needs to be in my playlist.
25) Two Dollar Shoes - Terri Hendrix
The last song again was an inherited CD from a friend and I found out we had a few good mutual friends. I have from a live cd with a full band, but I love this duo acoustic video. Makes me want to do a second "Shoes" DBT #66 playlist. (wow sorry that 4 of 11 videos in that DBT#66 playlist have been removed from YouTube... maybe I should just fix and repost it with some more songs)
Welp, that's 25 songs from my music library. I hope you enjoyed and found something new or relived some history. Here's the ONE-Click playlist.
