DBT #363 Basic Living
One person's odd day is another's "Basic Living"; sometimes alone and sometimes with the family you love. Today's playlist threads new music in the library with characters, choices, and current decisions. Yes Family is a favorite subject hitting Edition #237 and #346 and of course can be pretty basic and are included, but how about Churches, Bars, and Paychecks?
I kept find the threads so I ended up with 16 songs, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to find all of them, here we go:
Kevin for some reason only lets people on Bandcamp buy the vinyl "Writing With Fire" with this song, but guess who bought the vinyl. Ha. Since he only has 9 left on the site maybe he'll add the songs digitally next. I did find this great sounding video of him doing the song solo, and it's the first in a three song set. It's a great reimagining of the traditional song.
2) Dry Town - Della Mae
Dang have we all run into a dry town just when you wanted a good beer? Della Mae does an excellent cover of Gillian Welch's song. While they have a Bandcamp page, this cd that I got from a friend who had a double isn't on there for some reason. SCORE... they posted a live cover of the song on YouTube:
3) Never Been To Spain - Kevin Niedig and Henry Koretzky
Kevin, the great marketer, decided to add this awesome record in my shipment of the "Writing With Fire" purchase. Dang I love it when people gift me their music and it surprises me when I open the box. I can't find the album anywhere to point you for listening, so I took a plunge into posting a fan audio video. The clips came from a short I made that the YouTube google AI powers matched up part of the clips as being this song and stopped it. So I made this, they seem to allow you to post the whole song and just quarantine it from making money. Which believe me I make no money at posting anything. Of course sometimes musicians send me free music Ha.
4) Ugliest House In Town - Loveseat
Bill & JJ I'm sure don't live in the ugliest house, but sometimes don't we all feel a little like the neighbors have more and better than we do? Just natural. The song is on their new record, "Our Way" but here's a quick solo video of them doing the song live on the little stage at Moccasin Creek Festival.
5) Weekend Willie - The Willis Brothers
I picked up this vinyl gem pretty reasonably priced on our SERFA trip to KY. Willie here is pretty basically living good on weekends.
6) Camp a Little While - Annick Odom & Linen of Words
Annick proved she is a special bass player, one that is ready to take the stage solo. Amazing voice and talent, this song highlights her spacial feel she can bring to a song. It's a traditional song, and while I couldn't find her version I bought in Bandcamp, listen to the contrast to the a cappella group of kids.
7) Queer Bungo Rye - Gordon Bok
A vinyl find on my SERFA trip, it queerly fits into this playlist with it's real life story on the shoreline getting a great bottle of rye whiskey.
8) The Right Choice - Lucy Isabel
Yes... the next president of SERFA is a wonderfully friendly women who is an excellent singer songwriter, and this song fits:
And I don’t have time
To believe that
I’m taking too long.
You’re better off
Living your life
Like it’s slipping away.
To believe that
I’m taking too long.
You’re better off
Living your life
Like it’s slipping away.
9) Family at the Door - Good Enough
Oh we've all had some great family get togethers, and Good Enough and captured it in song that they all know.
10) Minimum Wage - Lyal Strickland
We really loved Lyal's common man writing, felt so much like listening to a young Greg Brown, while my wife said he looks like Colin Firth. This song fits so smoothly into the playlist theme:
I’ll work this farm ’til my days are done
Don’t need no watch to tell me about the midday sun
You can have your job I don’t need it none
Climbing corporate ladders that got no rungs
It ain’t just about religion and guns
But I find some things in common with the prodigal son
Don’t need no watch to tell me about the midday sun
You can have your job I don’t need it none
Climbing corporate ladders that got no rungs
It ain’t just about religion and guns
But I find some things in common with the prodigal son
Ok Colin with a beard?
11) Paycheck - Mike Ward
Mike gave me a pre-release cd copy at SERFA, and it's wonderful but not being released until July so I'll be back to update this playlist. You can understand already it fits.
12) Don't Put Me In A Town - Rachel Laven
Rachel is a legit folky with country roots, and little foot tapper captures a slice of life.
Don’t put me in a town with more churches than bars.
Where people are outnumbered by broke down old cars.
Where people are outnumbered by broke down old cars.
And we find out that it's about Cheatenville, Texas, though I think the accent got me I could only find Chesterville TX with a population of 50.
13) Cradle to the Grave - A Different Thread
Some might say my favorite new duo captured the whole span of this playlist theme.
14) Otherside - Ben Gage
Our other favorite Greg Brown padawan, this song really has that humble guitar picking and storytelling we've always loved from Greg.
When I get on the other side, start to share
When I get on the other side, I learned it once somewhere
Gonna reach back through my childhood, find it rotting there
When I get on the other side, gonna start to share
When I get on the other side, I learned it once somewhere
Gonna reach back through my childhood, find it rotting there
When I get on the other side, gonna start to share
Here's even more simple live video. Now Greg was also known to play a smaller guitar, I'm not sure if Ben's guitar is small because Ben's has a pretty big frame.
15) Family Tree - The Staples
Yes another vinyl score, and since I wrote my own Family Tree song; I always love to hear another take, and this one is a bit more funky.
16) Calling My Children Home - Emmylou Harris
From her live Spyboy album that I scored finding a rare promo copy CD.
Ahh... now this playlist took me longer than normal. It's been busy around the place and then we took off for Moccasin Creek Festival. Yes I came back home with 80+ videos I needed to edit, post, and then make a playlist. Figured I needed to finish this one first.
