DBT #375 Vinyl Cuts
Where do I start? I know I've been too silent on the blog, but it's not that I haven't so active adding music from people I've seen, to musicians I'm learning about, and to my legends. Add in when my old vinyl shows up in a connection and I'm in the backroom finding a cool archive. Of course I love putting a vinyl on and listening to it, but it isn't transportable.
When you decide to unplug from Spotify and other streaming alternatives, you might reach out to the many antique and used record stores. Sure then how do you listen while you are jogging, driving, or just sitting around working? Well I'm Mac based so I have a turntable hooked in my iMac with a simple Phono Inputs to USB (dang cheap) and I let Garageband do it's magic. (if you ever need guidance comment; it's not that tough... here's a video.)
Ok so let's have some fun listening to music that I've recently imported... BRAND A** new to the Mono copies you thought were stereo. Ok I love to say my playlist is eclectic, and while it is I've grown to have appreciation the there is so much music that I truly won't pay even a $1 to add it to the library. You won't find a heck a lot of heavy metal, hair metal, or rap unless I find a connection to an artist that I admire. Plus lately I've been a great deal of Vinyl on Bandcamp for the permanency and the collectibility; but if I didn't have to import the vinyl it wasn't eligible for this playlist. So here it is and it's such a great traveler playlist:
1) Tennesse Blues - Tracy Nelson / Mother Earth
The first album that Tracy was promoted to main title because she was the main reason people were listening. It's a great Bobby Charles cover.
2) Jewel of the Blue Ridge - Sparrow Smith
Sparrow is the main writer in the husband and wife duo The Resonant Rogues; and when she was at the Great River Folk Fest she was traveling with her brand new unreleased vinyl, "Carolina Mountains". You know who picked it up, and then proceeded to get it submitted to Discogs. Amazingly three other Discog members already have it too. Love this video too.
3) She's No Angel - New Riders of the Purple Sage
Recently I picked their 1972 sophomore release, "Gypsy Cowboy" and truly it's a treat. I did find an clean audio video out there, but this old live cut has a great sound for a grainy b&w video.
4) Room To Grow - Carmen Nickerson
"Room To Grow" is the title cut from Carmen's vinyl I also bought at the Great River Folk Fest. Funny another one I needed to submit to Discogs though it had been released in 2023. Quickly it has been put on someone's wantlist. There a some live video cuts, but the production of this is so sweet I'm sharing the audio video.
5) She - Emmylou Harris
The next two cuts come from a revisit to an old compilation album called "Limo". I had seen the record on the turntable at the Big River Theatre on a recent stop to see The Rough and Tumble. We got into a quick conversation on the old vinyl, and it got me to pull it out of the library and import a few of the songs from the double album. I know, I should probably put the "Luxury Liner" on my list to import too. You know Emmylou can sing too.
6) Nothing But A Breeze - Jesse Winchester
While I have other Jesse records I don't have "Nothing But A Breeze" but of course after this post it's now on my wantlist. Too funny, I'm also following an Emmylou song with a song she sings harmonies on.
7) After the Fire is Gone - Tracy Nelson w/Willie Nelson
Tracy's second appearance in this playlist, and I bought this self-titled first solo vinyl "Tracy Nelson" at a quick stop in Winona. It was my second vinyl from her, and I'm really seeing she's got that Bonnie Raitt vibe in picking great covers. I think it was also when I started digging deeper and put the Mother Earth vinyl on my want list. Loved this song she got Willie Nelson (no relation) to sing on. Wow a 1977 video with that young punk Willie.
8) The Brand New Tennessee Waltz - Jesse Winchester
Jesse's second appearance in the playlist and I found this self-titled rookie gem during my Mile of Music trip. Yes I really love stopping at vinyl stores when I'm on the road. The record doesn't disappoint, and it was produced by Robbie Robertson. Here's a 1990 video that's cool to watch him play the song, but sadly their settings don't allow it to be added to a playlist. So the playlist at the end will have the studio audio video. Actually it's so good, listen to both.
9) East TN Goddamn - Adrian & Meredith
While at MoM too I bought "Bad For Business" from this great duo / band. Truly they are a fun group to see live and this East TN song captures their Kelzmer type energy. Ok they get two videos, studio and the live one I took at Mile of Music.
10) I Think I'm Gonna To Live Forever - Merle Haggard
"Big City" was another deal I found shopping during the MoM. No one lives forever, but good music never expires or dies.
11) I Get Up Early In The Morning - Roger Miller
I got the "One and Only" Roger Miller on my SERFA trip, and this was the one I thought was Mono, but I did get the stereo version. Hey this blog post was because I got up early in the morning to get a new set of tires on my Subaru.
12) Blue Ridge Mountain Refugees - John McCutcheon
Another Rookie Album from a legend, and you know I love to put those in the library. I scooped up "How Can I Keep From Singing" on my SERFA trip to Owensboro KY. It truly does amaze me that more vinyl collectors don't try to value rookie releases more. It appears I need to add this song to YouTube if I'm going to share it here, so here it is.
13) The First Time I Saw Mary - The Doug Dillard Band
Ha the album is called "What's That?" and that is what I might have said to myself when I found it in my library and not in Discogs. Nope I don't remember when I got it. If you note my picture of the playlist has the Fist Time, that's what's out in the Discog's listing, and when importing I normally copy and paste from the listing rather then type the names of each song. This gospel song about Mary with baby Jesus, was cowritten by John Hartford.
14) Two Hits and Joint Turned Brown - Dillard / Hartford / Dillard
Speaking of Hartford, yes good friends of Dillard and put out a great vinyl "Glitter Grass from the Nashwood Hollyville Strings" that I traded some double for. Another gospel tinged song from John, this about Bob Marley and his favorite pasttime.
15) Are There Any More Real Cowboy - Neil Young
Neil's "Old Ways" came up in one of my searches, and I just needed to put some of my favorites from the record in my digital library. Of course how about the second Willie Nelson duet of the playlist. Of course give it up for an awesome 1985 video too. Say what wasn't Trigger available for shoot? It's definitely being played in the audio.
Well that's it for today... sure I could do this type of eclectic playlist over and over.
