DBT #318 Around Town Highlights Vol 2

When I ended the April 9th 2024 Around Town Highlights Volume One, Edition #285, I said I would be back for Volume Two because I hadn't scratched the surface of my favorites within the YouTube playlist of music that I had recorded in my many concerts I've attended.  Back then I had 280 videos in the playlist and as of today there are 470 videos; yes it's been a busy summer.  I also said that I was dissappointed I only went back around 8 months, so this volume will help fix that a bit.  (Click Here for the full playlist which will keep changing but the link stays the same.)

1) Four Strong Winds - Fayme Rochelle and the Waxwings

Let's start with last weekend and a quickly becoming viral post, "Four Strong Winds" cover by Fayme Rochelle and the Waxwings.  Laun and Fayme did a great job on this duet, plus two other in their set that night. (We're Not the Jet Set and Early Morning Rain)  It was my first visit to the remodeled Popcorn, it has a very nice stage setup in the back.  Plus while Fayme has been in LaCrosse for a while, I for some reason never saw her yet.  She killed the retro country and modern Americana covers in that hour set during the fundraiser.  Her originals are on Bandcamp.

2) Crazy Train - Sarah Peacock

While we were so lucky to host Sarah and Danni Nicholls for a house concert, we also were blessed to be inn keepers for them the weekend before.  Sarah played the local legendary Leo & Leona's and I told her I'd love to get a video to help promote the house concert.  We quickly agreed her cover of Crazy Train would work well to get my people excited.  Heck I had even a friend, Todd Saner, the keyboard player in the Waxwings band, tell me the video has inspired him to learn it and now he's heard the words of the song!

3) Candidate for Your Attention - Gabrielle Louis

I have been following Gabrielle since my days in MySpace, and it was a highlight for me to finally see her live at the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest.   I have a few of her albums in Bandcamp too; go ahead and make her day and buy some of her music.  She's expecting a child as I'm writing this so touring has to be harder on her.

4) Universal Bubba - Willi Carlisle

Yes it was on my bucket list back in July to see Willi someday and then we saw him twice at Mile of Music and the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest.  Boy he didn't disappoint, and I knew Lori would love him too.  Yes she was asking me if he is too big to play our house concert; heck he was almost to big for those low ceilings in this room.  I have reached out to him and his agent, fingers crossed he's traveling through and we'll be a point on the tour.

5) Poor People Store and more - Shinyribs

Lori and I will talk your ear off how much we loved Shiny Ribs at the Moccasin Creek Festival.  So much we put up with being in the mosh pit.  We're hoping MCF brings him back again, we're starting to be regulars to that festival in Effingham IL.

6) Tattoo Zoo - Jaimee Harris

While we had heard Jaimee the year before backing up Mary Gauthier; the Moccasin Creek Festival was when I first heard her solo material and fell in love with her and her writing.

7) Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues - Luke Callen

Thanks to Luke for bringing this song back into my head, since I've bought a Danny O'Keefe vinyl.  Luke tells me that they are working up a studio cover too.  Yep in a short 12 song highlight I needed at least one video from my favorite local bar and restaurant, The Trempealeau Hotel.

8) It's Too Late to Call it a Night - Amy Speace

Dang, at about 1:00 in the morning at SERFA, Amy did one of my all time favorite songs.  It was one I would put on our tear down playlist after gigs.  Many a times we just couldn't bear to call it a night.

9) Annie's Place - Jess Klein

Ended up seeing Jess twice this summer, Moccasin Creek Fest and SERFA... at MCF I did ask her about doing house concerts; yes we're booked May 10th 2025.  Her Annie's Place song is my favorite of hers and the playlist also has a full band recording from MCF.

10) Hardest Part of Loving You - Stone and Snow

Ok I'm fast forwarding back now to where Edition 285 left off.  Boy Lori and I love Karen and Clint; and again it was a full house that got treated to their talents.  This year we ended up seeing them at SERFA and opening for Sarah Jarosz in Peoria, IL.

The boys played the Great River Folk Fest and had the crowd so engaged especially this song.  Lori and I love to see this every time we see a mattress along side the road.  Yes it happens more often than you would think.  This was recorded at The Main which a great new addition to venues in LaCrosse.

12) That Rabbit - Crooked Willow

I'm thankful for Barry Miller who books the Journey Lutheran concert series even if I seem to miss more than I make.  I got a couple nice videos from the night in March of 2023 when they booked Crooked Willow.  Tim Waller, the lead on this song, sadly passed away in fall of 2024. I'll always remember his smile and how welcoming of a spirit he was.

Ok so I made it a little further back this time.  Until Volume 3, I hope you find yourself wishing you would have made a few of these concerts; I know I wish I would have made some of the ones you got to and I didn't.  Right no playlist from within a playlist... have fun exploring the total playlist.
