DBT #370 Around Town Vol. 3

Yes I have seen a few buskers in my day including two that I have made a life long friends and they have played the house concert series.  Natalie Gelman has many stories of busking in the heart of New York City and Caitlin Jemma I first met busking the Pearl Street mall; so because I picked my furry friend for the post feature Natalie will have a video in Around Town Volume 3. (Sorry I  When we left the last volume I was at a mere 470 videos in the playlist and now I have cracked 700 and sit at 710.  I know it is nearly impossible to expect you to watch all of that music, so I another 12 videos that I love in this post, so we'll be up to 36 for all three.

Let's jump into it with a few rules, no repeats and they don't all come from the recent uploads.

1) Pieces of Time by Natalie Gelman

Natalie has played the house concert twice and she has a slot committed to her for Fall 2026.  So many thing have changed since she's played the last time.  Yes it was a Halloween concert so some of us were dressed accordingly, and Natalie was a cat.

2) News From Colorado - Emily Earle

If we went back 6 years for Natalie, let's go back another two for a Bluff View Concert with Emily Earle.  Yes I was as brash to ask Jessie McDonald an excellent local fiddler.  Right she practice like zero with Emily before the show.

3) I'm Not Going For Glory - The Rough & Tumble w/The Honey Badgers

Ok fast forward to a mere 13 days ago, when I talked my wife into an hour drive on a Wednesday night to see a band I've been following since the pandemic.  Likely it was the pandemic that helped me find them, and they brought the Honey Badgers with them.  It's not too tough to convince Lori to go to Alma, because the Big River Theatre is almost like a house concert.  Yes we bought the album "Hymns for my Atheist Sister & Her Friends to Sing Along To" that features this song.

4) Church in a Bar - Sara Morgan w/Kelly Hunt (Of a Feather)

Another trip, this time to Madison and my wife had a great idea to meet up with a niece we don't see often enough.  So a trip to The Harmony Bar & Grill was set. Sara had fallen out of my playlist with no good reason, and yes Kelly will show up again since this was the third time I had an opportunity to see her, and I won't hesitate for number four.  Yes she knows she has an open invite to play the Bluff View if we can get our schedules to align.  There are a few videos from the night, this is the best one since it still has a lot of natural light from the windows behind the ladies, plus I love this song about Knuckleheads.  (On my changing bucket list to go there)  The burgers and owners at the Harmony Bar were outstanding, we wouldn't hesitate going again.

5) Clouds by Kelly Hunt

This year was our first trip to Turkey River Cabin Concerts, and it won't be our last.  2+ hour trip winding along the Mississippi was so worth it.  We picked the Songwriters Retreat with six writers who I knew five pretty well.  At least I get a hug from Chad Elliott every time I see him.  I have loved Kelly's music since 2023, and dropped this review of her Ozark Symphony in the blog.  I also have some great video of Kelly with Kelley Smith (the woman on the right of her in the video) but that would be a repeat visit to Big River Theatre and I wanted to keep this playlist mixed up with venues too.

6) Skipper and His Wife - David Huckfelt, Barbara Jean & SHEL

11 years ago, (right jumping around because I was finding more older videos that needed to be in the playlist) I was on the Great River Folk Fest performer's committee and was influential getting Barbara Jean and SHEL to the fest, and Barbara brought along not only a guitarist but David Huckfelt (then of The Pines).  Here's a video memory of a song swap where SHEL joined in the Spider John Korner song.  Note obviously iPhone video quality and my shakiness has improved so much over time.

7) Crayola Doesn't Make a Color by Kristin Andreassen with Chris Eldridge

Ok I said that I've been following Kristin for a long time, and then I ran into this fan video I posted 16 years ago with a song from her trio Sometymes Why.

Yes that is Aoife O'Donovan and Ruth Ungar too.  With only two days at Mile of Music, we skipped seeing Flamy Grant (but made up for it a week later) and I'm so glad.  Kristin's husband Chris is part of the Punch Brothers, he was fantastic and love how they recreated this old favorite.  Hey you want to play a house concert?  Oh by the way, since the last highlight volume, I have started posting shorts too.  They are trickier because of copyright rules, and they need a couple extra editing steps to add the text and to turn the video horizontal.  Seems to be worth it, they get so many more views.

Yes, browse the Around Town Playlist, I got three more two more wonderful video memories of these two at Mile of Music.

8) Good Day by Flamy Grant

Speaking of our conflict with Flamy Grant, I told my friend Sage Christie I would try to get to see Flamy at Mile of Music but sadly it was two songs from a distance and then we needed to move on.  I followed her to find out she had two opportunities near us, an Eau Clair bar, and a Rochester MN house show.  Well you know I love house shows.  It was their first, so cool.  Flamy was outstanding and wow what a set of vocal pipes.  Yes there art two more short videos in the playlist from the night.

9)  Wide Open Road - The Weary Ramblers

Ha, I said no repeats and meant videos not artists.  I think all my Weary Rambler videos are favorites, and here's one from our first (not last for sure) Blackhawk Folk Fest. Sweet only another 2 1/2 hour trip.  Yes the video has a filter and tries to capture the old spooky feel that this song has with Kathryn's Lucy a viola/violin combo.

10) You're No Good - Sophie and The Saints

Speaking of filters, this incredible Linda Ronstadt cover felt like it needed a dash of special.  Sophie channels Linda in looks and vocals.  Just a fantastic Moccasin Creek memory.

11) The Devil You Know - A Different Thread

Ok only two videos left, so I need one from SERFA and we need one from my favorite local music place, The Trempealeau Hotel.  Well the SERA has to be from another husband and wife duo that we would love to get to our house concert series.  Alicia Best and Robert Jackson make up this mix of English and North Carolina musicians.  Alicia's a little taller than me and my wife teases me because she knows tall women intimidate me a little, with Alicia it's in a good way.

12) Six Pack of Beer and a Pack of Cigarettes - Erik Koskinen

Ok it was so hard not to feature the rising star Peyton Eilers from inside the bar, but if I had to pick one from the hotel it has to be Erik from the night the hotel used the patio seating for a listening room.  Plus I did request the song, and yes I couldn't get in the front row.  Might have almost been to close for a good video then.. ha.

There you have 12 videos with a great assortment of venues ... so many favorite memories are stored in those 700 videos including cool ones from new favorites such as Admiral Radio, Adrian & Meredith, and Rebel Eves all from Mile of Music 2025 ; and now you have access to 12 more stories behind them.  I hope this make is more accessible and fun.  You know the idea, Like and Subscribe to give me warm fuzzies like this post's feature picture.  Here's your playlist within a playlist.

Oh that's right I always give you an opportunity to listen to all 710 of them too:
