Well it's been another week heavy on lies coming out of Washington, but what do you expect when you hire a liar in chief to run the company. His whole schtick is lying as well documented in this Wikipedia page "False and Misleading Statements from Donald Trump", but the icing on the cake was the DOJ telling you that all information has been released to have NPR documented the "DOJ withheld and REMOVED missing pages". Of course MAGA people will deny and say this is a Democratic conspiracy or hoax, and that's just more lies. You know every ACCUSATION is really an ADMISSION of guilt for their leader. So while I always admired Republicans positions on States rights, balanced budget, and individual rights; under Trump they have lost their way and really have embraced racism and fascism. The Lincoln Project is a must follow if you aspire to their best taking back their party, and they will guide a sane Republican through the lies they are trying to ignore.
So where does the music come in? Well I have a habit now with the new turntable upstairs to grab a record from the backroom that I haven't listened to in ages; and bring it up for a spin or two while I play in the kitchen. (We take turns but many times my wife goes to the gym and yoga at that time so meal prep has become a nice little passion for me.)
On Wednesday, (the day after the SOTU) I brought up Trio the first album that Parton, Harris and Ronstadt put out and the first side played ended with "Telling Me Lies" and I was hooked and sure I needed to dive into it. Before I was even done curating it; I saw a dear friend of mine post something about her ex-husband, she described "The difference between you and me. I don't have to twist the story to make myself sound better, truth speaks for itself." Hey it's all about alternative facts for too many people, and some (mostly guys) are lying assholes.
I really wanted to stop at my Dave's Dozen; but I really couldn't bear to take any song out of this list; so it's a Dave's Baker Dozen of highly eclectic songs. Taylor Swift would love that it ends at 13, plus they are all delicious like sourdough buns too.
1) Telling Me Lies - Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris
Too funny, when I went to see what I had imported from this album, every song on side A except this song? No idea why and as I was fixing that and importing side B too, I learned this song was written by Linda Thompson after she and Richard was divorced, and later it was nominated for a Grammy for Country song of the year losing to "Forever and Ever, Amen." Well I guess that one was a pretty classic country song, but this ties very close to my friend's issue.
2) Lies - Stan Rogers
Another opportunity to keep Stan's music alive; and this one is one of his best from his 1981 album, "Northwest Passage". Stan writes of real love for a women who is aging and still is so beautiful to him:
At last the kids are gone now for the day She reaches for the coffee as the school bus pulls away Another day to tend the hous and plan For Friday at the Legion when she’s dancing with her man
Sure was a bitter winter but Friday will be fine And maybe last year’s Easter dress will serve her one more time She’d pass for twenty-nine but for her eyes But winter lines are telling wicked lies
All lies All those lines are telling wicked lies Lies all lies Too many lines there in that face Too many to erase or disguise They must be telling lies
3) Box of Lies - Emily Forst
Ok this is where the playlist really takes a divergent turn; all the way back to my 2012 MySpace days when I was networking trying to promote my songs as well as connecting with new music. Emily is definitely more Indy Folk Rock; and sadly it seems she's faded out of the music industry. I do treasure her album that I have no idea if I bought or she sent it to me. (cue my wife here, sure you follow her she's cute!) Her FB page hasn't had a post since 2013, but her website still exits, and she's also a software engineer. Maybe I should email her after this post is active. If I get a response, I'll update it here.
4) A Hundred of Lies - Malcomb Holcombe
From one of my pandemic buys of music in Bandcamp, here a title track of an album originally released in 1999. Another story song about a woman, but I'll leave you to have an opinion about life on the road.
Cheeks as red as a mirror Sunken eyes made o' stone See em meltin' in the honest sun As a hundred lies unfold
Dirty bread in some ol alley To a weddin' ring made on the slide Knowin' right still doin' wrong As a hundred Lies unfold
chorus
A hundred Lies in ev'ry town Let me buy an sell the ground One bit o' good to call my own As a hundred lies unfold
Here's a pretty rare live cut.
5) I Bought All The Lies - Grinderswitch
Yes I recently bought this album in August of 2025, and it fed my southern rock jam fix for the year. I always loved their sound, and their 1977 record "Redwing" will be a treasure to have around.
6) La-La-La Lies - The Who
My record in the collection of My Generation was a 2015 reissue and one I was gifted by a music friend I was hosting Sarah Peacock; who was gifted from a label that was entertaining her in Boston. I love the connections and the throwback to mono record originally released in 1965 when I was frickin seven years old. This is probably time to remind people that music has no expiration date in my blog, and that they only songs allowed in the playlist are the ones I own or like in this case was gifted. You can always feel free to gift me music, but I do buy a lot both new and used.
7) Lies Are All You Have - Willy Porter
Here's one that Willy released in 2020 during Trump's first release of a lying administration. Now he didn't push this out into YouTube, so right now it will not appear in the YouTube playlist at the end of this post. (At least until I decide if I should add it to the YT world)
8) Liquid Lies - The War and Treaty
Now I told you this is one eclectic playlist and I was excited to see this song come up in my search. Such a story of broken relationships, and I never heard tears described as liquied lies before.
What if the lights in the whole wide world Decide to turn themselves off? Where do you think it would leave Something as dark as you and me?
Now I won't try to figure out why 'Cause I've lost count of the tear drops That fall from your eyes Oh, liquid lies
I tried to give you the best of me Figuring I'd give you more of myself Failing to use my heart to see That the best of us wasn't made for we
9) Ricochet Lies - Emily Scott Robinson
One of my favorite voices and songwriters who has spinning a lot lately with her new album Appalachia album, this song was from a pre-Oh Boy Records label signing. I kind of wish she would do what Willi Carlisle did, put up a separate back catalog Bandcamp page because her old stuff including Magnolia Queen is really just as good as her new stuff. Her writing of this sad story, sure makes me wonder if it was around her divorce:
There's someone new She looks good next to you Has anything changed? Is your story the same? Tell me the truth
Where did you meet her? Was it midnight somewhere? Did you buy her a beer? Did she smile your way And try not to stare?
Fresh out of the shower Is she pretty like that Wrapped up in your towel Hair down her back?
Does wanna have babies? Does she hope you will stay? Is she holding out For a little white house And a big wedding day?
[Chorus] And maybe the price I paid was too high I can't take it back The bargain was bad Ricochet lies And maybe you loved me I'll never be sure And I can't ask anymore
10) Riddles & Lies - Danny Schmidt
The title track from a 2005 release from one of today's most incredible Leonard Cohen type songwriters.
There’s things I can say, when you’re inches away When you’re vision’s still blurry and close And our stories are flames of beeswax and shame As real and transparent as smoke
Tell me why, tell me why, all these riddles and lies And delicate threads of disguise When we’re all just the same, slightly organized rain Well why do we still choose to hide
11) Sweet, Sweet Lies - Thomas Bryan Eaton
Miss Tess's significant other, is a fine fine musician.
Trees are bare, wind is blowing
cold I don’t know which way I’m going
but I know,
I’ve got to get to you.
You left town, rather quick,
spun me around, left me feeling
sick,
of being alone.
So take me out, prop me up,
poison me with your silver cup of lies.
Oh oh
Sweet, sweet lies
12) Lies - Stephen Stills / Manassas
Ok my search took me to Discogs and a record "Down the Road" that I picked up recently and hadn't listened to it yet. Ha, now I can file it; and oh my I really love the song "Do You Remember the Americans" and I'm sure it will find it's way into a playlist.
13) Yesterday's Lies - Kenny Rankin
Another Discogs search and, oh, the record I had to buy for the second time because the first one was incredibly warped. "Like a Seed" a 1972 release is all originals and filled with rockers and gentle finger picked songs. I find I own almost everything that Kenny has released before 1992. So you can see there isn't a single song I could delete to get to a Dave's Dozen.
Another relationship tattered or being mended?
A man goes home to see his lady But walkin in the front door he feels a little shady Shes telling him again how shes been lonely But no matter how he tries to comfort her There is no reply And the man just dont know to laugh or cry If he though of wondering why It might give him the truth that would ease the pain Of yesterdays lies She loves him she knows how he feels in a bad turn When the pictures running through his mind Really bring him down Hes running in the wind looking for an answer But hows he gonna see behind the tears in his eyes And now theyre walking back in time Where there is nothing left to find If they thought of wondering why It might give them the truth that would ease the pain Of yesterdays lies
I hope a playlist like this brings a person comfort from the pain of lies from the manipulators of your life. I did share more lyrics than usual, but it was for context of the lies. Please use your shield of GOODNESS, and pray their evil lying words don't land and grow more hatred in the world. Here's a YouTube streamable playlist without the Willy Porter song...
