Well it was a trifecta of soul searching this week! First, it was Ash Wednesday and the honest self-reflection of the fact that I truly don't do enough for my fellow man. Next came a former WinCraft associate who leans way right posted, "Yes! Let er rip! I DO NOT CARE WHO THEY ARE! It's time!" about the Epstein probe. If you guessed right she thinks Trump is innocent. How many times can he say everyone else is lying and he's telling the truth, when he is documented as the biggest liar ever to hold the President's office. Come on, 27 women and they are all lying yet he's the one who bragged about grabbing their P*ssy.
Finally musically (and why you are here), I took time to listen to Emily Nenni's new song "Livin' in Shame" and knew I made the right call pre-ordering her new vinyl "Movin' Shoes" in Bandcamp. She's a future super star in Americana country, or maybe even mainstream country I don't care.
Shame, yep that's the word that Trump will never feel over any act he does that hurts immigrants, veterans, poor, farmers, or especially anyone living in a blue voting city. So as a lenten journey, let's journey through shame, victims, aggressors, pretenders, liars, and attempters, and yes this like the Satisfied playlist really had me diving deep into the collection requiring importing. So let's see how many songs will be found in Bandcamp or YouTube.
BTW I do consider this playlist is part of a rebellious vein of Lies and being American lately; plus having to Worry It's OK.
1) Livin' In Shame - Emily Nenni
Oh my, go pre-order her album, FUCK Spotify; and I have no shame in supporting music instead hiding behind a Spotify subscription that pays artists pennies if they get paid at all.
I do wonder how they got her lips in sync going backward, but I posted a comment so I'm on record that she is the most beautiful at the end of the video.
Of course when I saw the first search I said, "yippee a Lindsay Lou song" A dear friend of hers also is in this playlist at slot 7, and yes I was lucky to host Lindsay at our house concert before she got too big.
Plus a great live video with an incredible all woman band. Don't fret boys, she could get any guy she wanted, she's a saint and sinner to play with.
Boy this recent acquisition of Secret, Profane and Sugarcane has show up a few times, oh this song is so perfect. You should listen to the studio copy, but this is too fun not to share with Jim Lauderdale and Jerry Douglas smiling and playing along to an Elvis original.
Amazingly I love Martin and know him for his great original songs, but this is a cover that fits nicely into the next song too. He explains it as:
This is a traditional song that goes by many names. Like a lot of old songs, some of the original lyrics might not be so suitable for a modern world, but the nice thing about folk songs is that they can be updated, changed, manipulated, re-imagined, reinvented, and so on. Fiddlin’ John Carson recorded this song but called it “Ain’t it a Shame to Work on Sunday”. I got it from Leadbelly, and changed it a little bit.
Well searching YouTube I didn't expect to see this smiling face, here you go.
5) It's a Shame to Whip Your Wife on Sunday - The New Prairie Ramblers
Yikes, I'm not into maintaining old culture when it's so wrong, but to hear it so that you know it existed is important. Oh yeah.. Fuck Trump who wants to erase history, that is the real shame.
6) My, My, Isn't it a Shame - Rachel Kurtz
From a great 2018 album "Love, Rachel Kurtz" this Christian singer sure has a set of pipes.
I just picked up this 1981 self-title gem last week thinking if I'm going to see him for the first time this June 2026 at the Moccasin Creek Festival, I should know more of his back catalog. Hey maybe since he just re-recorded it in 2018 he'll have it in his playlist.
12) Crying Shame - Jack Johnson
Ok this is the first of three crying shames, all completely unique.
13) Shame on You - Indigo Girls
Sometimes I stop at a Dave's Dozen, but I loved these all, so then I hit my other limit of 16 covers fill the page. It took awhile to find this "Shaming of the Sun" cd to import it. I had tossed or lost the sleeve, so I looked in three spindles and an old carrying case, only to finally find it in the other Indigo Girls cd. Sure it fit two nicely, and I now I noted that in my Discogs page in case I'm looking for it again.
14) Ain't No Shame - Rory Block
Yes she is such a great blues voice, and I only have three albums from her.
15) Cryin' Shame - Stay Cats
I loved that I inherited this rarer Germany released album "Gonna Ball" Five of the Twelve songs were released later on their first American compilation release; so it's pretty cool this song is only on the European release.
16) Crying Shame - Kate Wolf
Right a total 360 from the Stray Cats, and it gave me a great reason to import the 1985 gem "Poet's Heart." Rare to hear Kate sing a duet this time with Alan Thornhill.
