DBT #402 The First Snow
While I danced around it with a December and January playlists, I was amazed to find I had never done a playlist as simple as "snow". Wow I had 87 songs alone in the digital library, and then I searched my Discogs library and found more. So here's volume one written and posted in our first major stop traffic snow of the 2025/26 season, Nov. 29th.
A fairly recent vinyl purchase of mine from Deaf Ear in LaCrosse. Fitting way to start the playlist, and oh no; I had to upload a video for you all to hear it. Well it's worth it and so is the record; go ahead buy a copy on Discogs.
2) Footprints In The Snow - The Vespers
Keeping it in a bluegrass vein, I found back in 2012 I bought two songs from a very interesting four piece group. Two brother and two sisters formed a wonderful band and put out two albums and then stopped. I used Google to tell me more.
Of course I had to watch the 6 minute Mini Documentary which is mostly about recording their album "The Fourth Wall", you can too here; and here's the song:3) Snow - Jesse Winchester
It's been fun to see how many times this rookie album of Jesse's turns up in playlists. (This will be the FOURTH time.) Sure enough he heard snow on the six o'clock newscast.
4) Awaiting the Snow - Lui Collins
A very contemplative song from the New England folkie.
5) Dancing Dirt Into The Snow - Missy Higgins
I tried to curate songs for the first or early snow, but this song intrigued me and I haven't listened to Missy for awhile. I was intrigued what the expression meant, and I found these theories:
i think the dancing dirt into the snow part refers to the ruining of something as pure as snow?
I think its about an insecure person that she was close to or someone who was very deeply hurt and suffering a kind of depression. And because of this they tend to block others out and put on this tough face. however, i think missy knew the person before they became like this and is trying to explain that she can see that they are hurting and almost going backwards. the dancing dirt into the snow i think refers to not being happy and maybe trying to be rid of the snow as its a sign of change?! I'm not sure if i'm on the right track but thats what i get out of it.
I agree with LoveThyEnemy, it is a song about someone suffering from a mental illness. The dancing dirt into the snow i think refers to the person being reactive to their problem and not being able to help themselves but rather pushing everyone away and making things worse for themselves. Everyone around them can see the pain and suffering the person is going through but cannot help. The person needs to help themselves by seeking help. Hehe, sounds a bit like i've had someone like that in my life. Sad song, fits so strongly to my experience.
And Google AI had this to say
I really love Missy's music since buying this back in 2005. While her singing makes the lyrics very clear, this video still helps absorbs the words better.
6) First Snow Of December - Dave Boutette
I believe I received this cd from Dave as he was promoting himself to play my house concert back in 2013. I did end up running into him I believe at FARM in 2022. Here's a video of him with his partner live at a what appears to be a very cool listening room.
7) California Snow - Sofia Talvik
Sofia had a few snow songs, I couldn't pass up this one about Jonas (right he's one lucky dog); here's the studio version:
If you didn't know, Sofia has played the Bluff View too. Here's a live video with a guest guitarist:
8) On The Snowy Banks of the Mississippi - Aaron Lee Kaplan
You can almost hear the cars spinning out in the distance on this instrumental from a regional blues player. I just love the artwork on the album too.
9) Snow Don't Fall - Townes Van Zant
I was expecting to put Snowing on Raton, but I saw this gem in the library. There is an audio video on his official page, but this fan memory video is so well done.
10) Snow Angel - Jake La Botz
Jake hasn't been in any playlists lately, and I'm so glad it's in this one. (Yes there will be an audio video in the playlist that follows.)
11) Snow On The Beach - Taylor Swift with Lana Del Rey
Well Taylor made it into a playlist. Now this song is more of my style, and not because Taylor swears, but because I'm just not much of a dance song guy since the disco days. Right of course I had to look up Lana and I'm too so happy that this song made it in the playlist and that I scored a copy of the cd in the library.
12) Snow White Knuckles - Jaimee Harris
Now for something totally different that Tay Tay, much more Americana. About giving up drugs, and the snow is an adjective of her the whiteness of her knuckles she never mentions in the song. Ok so two songs are not truly about snow, but this one does have cocaine in it too; so another snow reference.
Jaimee has been getting a lot more traffic in my blog lately because about a year after I posted a review of her album "Boomerang Town" she discovered the post on Reddit. I'm just so happy it's getting more eyeballs because it's a great album.
This song comes from her 2020 release "Red Rescue"
Here's a solo video she did for Turn Up For Recovery, and I almost didn't recognize her without her heart shaped sunglasses.
13) Rain & Snow - Greg Brown
Relax let the master sing you a story.
14) Snow In Wyoming - Missy Jo
Of course there is snow is one of the prettiest places on earth. Here Missy Jo, yes the one that sang "Snake Farm" on my Farm playlist; is back again.
There's snow in Wyoming, once again.
It's bitter and it's haunting me
just like an old friend.
Every year it happens
and I just have to pretend
that I like the snow in Wyoming, again.
The leaves are barely hanging by a thread
and the cold will leave them bare
and usher them into the dead.
Every year it happens
but I never want autumn to end.
There's snow in Wyoming, again.
It's bitter and it's haunting me
just like an old friend.
Every year it happens
and I just have to pretend
that I like the snow in Wyoming, again.
The leaves are barely hanging by a thread
and the cold will leave them bare
and usher them into the dead.
Every year it happens
but I never want autumn to end.
There's snow in Wyoming, again.
Of course I loved how she described the song in her video below:
I wrote "Snow in Wyoming" 2 years ago when we had our first snow in October. Growing up in the mountains I have learned to brave to the winter weather, but the older I get the more I resented its months of torment. I have been trying to rekindle my relationship with the snow and even find a love for it, but the day I filmed this was on the tail end of a 4 day snow storm and 15 degree weather. Unfortunately, that has hindered our progress. My irritation for the cold has highlighted that perhaps its not the weather I am upset about, but that I have a hard time letting go of things that are ultimately beyond my control. "Maybe I'm resistant to change."
Knowing her Dad and I grew up in Manitowoc along Lake Michigan where our springs were almost non-existent, I would welcome her to live near LaCrosse. It has beautiful springs, bluff that will remind her of the mountains, and just a touch of winter that starts late November.
Sweet, here she is sitting outside playing the song for NPR's Tiny Desk Contest.
15) Snowfalls - Barbara Jean
Our second Bluff View alumni who actually has played it twice both times with Erik Koskinen. She picks up the pace as the snowfalls.
16) Snowing on Roton - The Calico Stray
Right I thought better than having Townes sing twice when I had the wonderful sister group in the library covering his song. (I actually have two more covers including a rare cover live with Humbird and Luke Callen the only song I couldn't put into this album from the house concert because of copyright. Hey if you buy the album on Bandcamp I'll email you the song.) Caitlin takes the lead vocals on this one.
Now sometimes I let it ride if I can find the song in Bandcamp but not in YouTube. These sisters needed to have a video in my channel.
Now here is your one click YouTube playlist for those who just want the playlist to play for you without all that reading getting in the way.
