DBT #327 Cheers to 2024
Well that's a wrap on the year? Yes and for me I had plenty of music to thrive on while the world somehow shifted more to the right. I'm not about to depress or get you mad, let's see what my journey has been and highlight a few of my memories.
First I looked at my digital library, and it's up to 28,625 songs for over 74.4 days of listening and within that I separated the music that was released in 2024.
612 songs, 1.5 days of listening, and some of my favorite albums like my top three for the year, Susan Werner "Halfway to Houston", Weary Ramblers "Self titled", and Corb Lund "El Viejo" and oh yeah the links take you to their reviews.
It's sad and safe to say that all that music hasn't been totally absorbed (or sometimes a few songs without a play) so I created a 50 song highlight playlist that I'm listening to as I write this.
Here's a clearer list of songs:
Sure the list has musicians that I've met and sometimes hosted for house concerts including Siri of Humbird, Luke Callen (who rekindled my love of Danny O'Keefe), Sarah Peacock (who's house concert was an incredible mix of music including unreleased gems), Danni Nicholls (who'll I'll think of when watching Bridgerton next time), Buffalo Rose (a rare Patreon gem), local friend Dylan Harris (who is also a great dancer), Mike Ward (a guy with my passion on Immigration but phht on the Detroit Lions), Erik Koskinen (until the next time you are at the Tremp. hotel), Jaspar Lepak (her album was truly "So Strong"), Danny Schmidt (2013 house concert seems ages ago) Matt Monsoor (also runs a local house concert series), Geneviève Racette (fun to meet her at the Pump House), Cindy Kalmenson (Rocky Mtn Folks Fest Rocks!), Michaela Anne (from Greg Tooke's house concert to RMFF, Ha), Amadans (local Irish legends), and it seems after following them for a couple years I really feel like I know half of The Calico Stray
I have to thank SERFA for introducing me to Emma Frances (the apple didn't fall from the tree), The Magnolia Janes, Admiral Radio, and of course Jess Klein who will be playing the Bluff View House Concerts in May.
A few musician friends who I haven't officially met yet; DC Anderson and Frank Critelli are in the list as well as legends like Judy Collins, Molly Tuttle, Gillian Welch, Dan Reeder, and Beyonce.
Bright and rising stars who some I saw live this year, include The Cactus Blossoms, Amigo the Devil, Allison Russell, Maggie Rogers, Corb Lund, and The Accidentals.
A special 2024 memories are wrapped (and videos in the Around Town Playlist) up in artists like Willi Carlisle, Shinyribs, and Carsie Blanton while artists I either discovered this year and/or I just need to get more of their music include Nicolette & The Nobodies, Molly Brandt, Dawn Landes, Cari Lacey, Austin Skalecki, Andrea von Kampen, Lui Collins, and Marc Douglas Berardo.
I think I hit them all except one cover from Andy Sydow, yes he took on my favorite Taylor Swift song and aced it; hey he needs more people to buy it and pay for those cover license fees:
Ok so that was music released in 2024, now you know me GOOD Music has NO Expiration Date, plus I continually add and dive into my vinyl library, so I officially added 3,646 songs and 9.4 days of listening. (ha I even added 3 more cd's since I took this picture)
I'm not going to try to highlight all this music but I'd say that's why I do playlists and my top five favorite this year has been, Brought to by the Letter W, Dresses Vol 2, Don't Bogart that Song, Texas Attitude, and Witch Hunt.
During 2024, I noted that this was the 50th Anniversary of 1974, and boy it was so much fun that I've already made the 1975 playlist for next year. It took two Volumes of 25 songs each (One and Two obviously) with a lot of vinyl importing. Remember back in 1974 CD's didn't exist. Well they did in 1999 that celebrated it's 25th Anniversary.
Well another thing that kept me busy in 2024, my Around Town Playlist grew by 236 videos to close the year at 499 (right really double) to a point where I decided it needed a blog post to highlight favorites. Ha by year end I two posts just for highlighting 12 videos per post.
I know missed something but if you click on all the links above you will be saturated in music. I hope you all had a great year, and will find some music in 2025; you know I will.
